[#4184665]

Just swapped over the hoses of my new SLX brakes. Front one went fine with no problems at all and feels great, but the back one was a struggle. As part of switching the hoses over I pumped the lever to get the pistons out a bit. They didn't come out evenly, didn't think anything of it as they're new brakes.. hose changed fine, going to put the pads back in and the piston that didn't come out very far seems seized. Got the pads in and started to wiggle a screwdriver in between them.. it was taking quite a bit of force to push them back, then I noticed that I was leaking oil from around the sides of the piston. I assume I somehow damaged it trying to push the pistons back in?

Is there anything I can do about this or is the brake ****ed? Bought from Rose so I guess sending anything back will be a pain in the arse, and will they just say its my fault for using excessive force? Is there any warranty since I swapped/trimmed the hoses? tbh I'm sick of shelling out for expensive fragile mtb stuff! Shame as they seem like nice brakes and the front is great.

The seals may be ok. probably that piston has come out and when you tried to push it in gone in squint. You need to pull that piston right out and then try to push it back in making sure it goes in square - it should be stiff but not need a huge amount of force.

You are going to have to bleed them as well

Sounds like you have forced it in squint and damaged the seal !

Took the (now useless due to oil) pads out and there appears to be a crack in the piston. Can't find any spares so I guess the brake is junk. Should've just bought 2nd hand Hopes!

Although you can take it all apart and the pistons are replaceable Shimano doesnt seem to sell the pistons. So new calliper time I believe! Ceramic pistons are perhaps a little short sighted as a concept - especially for the ham fisted (like me)!

Yep I don't exactly have the most finesse when it comes to mechanicals either haha. I knew buying stuff that can't be serviced was a bad idea! Not buying another one so its off to ebay to get a hope I think.

Craked piston? Warranty replacement, surely.

Whys that then ? Warrenty Is for manufacturing defects - it wasnt designed to have a point load in the form of a screw driver wiggled about and pressed quite hard into it .

Pull the other one

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was my fault.

You can get a new caliper for not much money, think you need to suck it up since it was your fault.

AFAIK the pistons are metal with a phenolic insert.

I was going to see if anyone has a caliper that has other problems that i could strip for spares so if you have one i might take it trail rat! Don't think i fancy buying another new one after how easily i broke this one ๐Ÿ˜† not sure whether the pistons will be the same, this is a 2013 model i think, m675.
