Can I use a brand new 9/10 rear mech on an old 5 speed freewheel and late 70s chainset.
In friction mode?

The bike has late 70s campagnolo Super Record hubs and Super record chainset.

Just had the frame refurbed and there's loads of life in it yet. Except I need a rear mech, and rather than use an old item I thought a modern jobbie might give better service.

It might, but not by much, and it'll look well odd.
