New Enduro Wheel Build

I'm looking for a new rear 27.5 wheel for small jumps and bashing around BPW type stuff. I can't decide what to go for. Needs to 12x148, Microspline and preferably aluminium to keep price down

I could buy a:

Hunt wheel, Nukeproof Horizon or a Hope Fortus 30.

I've got a Hunt rear hub that I could build up into a suitable rim, but it's only 28 holes. That said I only weigh 70 kg in my kit.

I've seen some Hope Pro 4 hubs at reasonable prices. But not sure what rim to go for.

I've heard lots of good things about DT Swiss, but I've not seen much in stock anywhere UK based.

Any suggestions?

If building up from hub yourself then dt swiss ex511 rims will take a lot of abuse (or the ex471 - depends if you want 25 or 30mm internal rim width). If you’re an absolute mutant at smashing wheels up then the FR541 or FR 560 are very very strong. The 560 is the outgoing model (maybe some bargains?) the 541 is the new one.

Out of the wheel sets you mention I’d go for the horizon or the Hope. I think the Fortus 30 is meant to be pretty strong - but the rim maybe biblically heavy.

DT come in via Madison so pretty much any bike shop can get them and all UK wheelbuilders use them.

From the complete range the EX 1700 is probably the one you want. 350 hub, EX 511 rim, solid and not over heavy.

There are new Hope Fortus rims. They are Fortus SC nd are single cavity. They are lighter than the DH style Fortus.

Side note, is DT Swiss 471, 511 stated ERD correct, seems a little long compared to rims with similar profile height, for example a Spank spike 33 is 1mm taller but the erd is 5mm shorter on same 27.5 rims, there's a 3mm discrepancy, are DT a lot thicker at the spoke hole, other brand rims with similar profile to the Spanks are pretty much the same ERD give or take a milli but not 5mm out. I've allowed for Spanks weird ++ measuring system, I'm baffled. I've measured other rims from Mavic, sun ringle, similar profile height gives similar ERD.

The posher DT rims (XR, XM, EX etc) come with nippers and washers that spread the load on the spoke bed.

The quoted ERD factors these in.

I’ve got some Fortus 30 on Pro 4 hubs. They seem strong, but not light.

Thanks for tips there. As a general rule I always buy the hub and rim first to measure them myself and then order the spokes. Handy to know about any oddities.

I've seen a lot of "Enduro" wheels with only 28 spokes. This seems too few to me. I never built even 26" wheels with any less than 32 spokes.

Is 28 just marketing to try and reduce weight?

Every 28h rear wheel I've ever made the mistake of owning has been unreliable in the spoke, or spoke hole department. They insist on making them 2x as well, so theres a sharper transition of loads as the wheel turns.

32h, eyeletted or washers, and 3x cross for me.

I can get away with 28 h front though. My front wheels have a much easier life.
