I've never been quite happy with the air Fox X2 on my YT Tues, despite having set the sag correctly and other settings to my liking, I find it doesn't have great mid stoke support. Others have said to add pressure, but I don't want to do that as that means running less sag. Therefore I'm in the market for a coil shock.

Having called up TF Tuned, one of their recommendations is the Ohlins TTX coil, which they will custom tune. Does anyone know if this is any good? I ask as its not a widespread as something like a DHX2. Has anyone tried one?

Cheers

Very briefly, and it was excellent - felt a lot like a ccdb coil, which is the best shock I've owned.

Have you played around with tokens on the X2 though? They make a massive difference on my bike.

Ccdb coil inline another option? Not necessarily better than the X2, bit definitely more coil-y.

despite having set the sag correctly

There is no correct sag.

Does the shock bottom out regularly?
Is there enough pedal platform?
Is there enough small bump sensitvity?

I think they are mint, only ever ridden an ohlins coil so can’t compare with any other coil shocks. Loads of traction, smooth, and can be set up how you want it. I occasionally drop the air shock back on but after a ride it’s straight back to the coil, air always feels rubbish in comparison.

I’m running a CCDB coil on my Enduro, and a TTX on my trail bike.
Both great options, although I’d say the CCDB wins out by a small margin.

I’m a biffer tho, so I need the tuning ability to maximise the set-up. If your’re running a shortish travel bike then the TTX would probably be just as good.

Just make sure you get the spring weight ‘just’ right. Dont rely on the charts that Tf and others suggest, IMO they’re not very useful. It’s trail and error to find the right one.

Thanks All,

Cha****ng - no not played with the tokens yet, that is definitely on my to do list before I go and spend a load of money on a coil. Have heard from a few people that the tokens won't help with the mid stroke support problem though, but I figured it doesn't hurt to try a few less or a few more. I don't know whats in there TBH so worth checking.

The o-ring on the shock gets to within about 2mm of the shock body, so i assume that's the bottom out but i could be wrong. It pedals fine although does feel a touch harsh on smaller hits which i think must be due to me adding some HSC.

As it happens TF did say the CCDB is a solid option, they said its not quite as good as the DHX2 but the margins are tiny

I've just put a TTX22 on my bike after running several airshocks, I hadnt done many rides and didnt intially find any difference, rode FOD on saturday and could really tell the difference, felt more planted and sticking to the ground where as before my backend with an airshock would have been bouncing off everything!

Something I wasnt sure on would be spring rates, I picked up the springs for my weight and the ones above and below, turns out might need a harder one again, not sure if for harder riders there is a rule for going up spring rates or not but I'm sure TF will see you right.

Ccdb coil inline another option

The inline is a trail/enduro shock. They don't make them big enough for a Tues.

Given the performance of the inline I have on my heckler I'd be very happy with its big brother on my Tues.

Jtech have an ex display on sale, might be worth a look?

Thanks for the heads up! That's a good deal.

Equally temping is a Ohlins TTX I've seen on Pinkbike for around £450. Although I was looking to buy new, saving some cash would be good of course.

Really liking the look of both the CCDB and the Ohlins, makes it hard to choose between them

That’s not that much of a saving, and both j-tech and TF have great customer service in my experience - loads of advice and v quick to sort out any issues, so I’d be tempted to go new..!
