New Chainset - Commuter Bike - Help!

Hey hive mind.

Could you be so kind as to help me....

I have a Merida Espeeder 400 EQ. https://www.merida-bikes.com/en-gb/bike/2813/espeeder-400-eq

The chain is starting to drop on a regular occasion. I suspect this is a combination of worn chain and worn front ring.

For ease of future replacements i would like to change the chainset to something a bit more common than the current item on there, which is a Merida branded Samox chainset.

Not being totally up to speed with commuter/road stuff, i fear purchasing the wrong thing. Hopefully you can guide me?!

The BB shell is 68mm, chain line on current cranks is 52mm. 175mm arms. 44t ring. 24mm axle. rest of the drivechain is Shimano Deore 10 speed.

Ideally i would like to replace it with a narrow/wide front ring, so was thinking along the lines of a Shimano GRX single ring setup. Would this be a straight swap? As the axle is the same diameter and the chainline is 50.1mm.

It appears most GRX single rings are 11 speed, i again assume this would still work with a 10 speed chain?

Spotted these at Merlin: https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-grx-810-gravel-chainset-1x11-speed-167419.html?utm_source=PHG&utm_medium=AffiliateMarketing&utm_campaign=phg-GB&ucpo=93571&msclkid=3547479b6197168cabc123f8160377c3

I dont want to spend a fortune and as i say, its an attempt to future proof myself rather than trying to get obscure parts.

Other recommendations are happily received. Or if someone could confirm that the above will work without issue.

thanking you in advance!

With it being e-bike and commuter, what about a steel N/W chainring setup?

Shimano Deore M6100 or SLX M7100 direct mount cranks
104 BCD adaptor
Cheap 44t steel N/W chainring
And tweak the chainline with chainline spacers if necessary

I'm fed up going through alloy N/W rings on my commuter where I use a single 36t chainring. Yet to fit, but I've gone the path described above with M6100 cranks, a 104 BCD adaptor for them, and a cheap steel n/w 36t chainring. 104BCD chainrings give you more options including steel, compared to the limited choice in Shimano 96 or 110 assymetic bolt patterns.

Unless the current crank has some really obscure BCD why not just buy a replacement chainring?

@a11y - thats a great shout. I will take a look.

@MrBlond - that is an option, just seemed like a good excuse for a slight upgrade. Current ring is 104 BCD, so common.
