[#1823557]

Was at the LBS today picking up some boxes to send frames and whatnot off in and got the shock of my life (well almost) when my mum said "shall we have a look at the price of some new bikes". My jaw hit the floor, usually she is one of the "christ you could get a car for that!" and "just get something for £100 from Halfords" bunch.

So in we went. My LBS deals mostly in Specialized, Marin and Orange. Told the salesman a little about what I was thinking and he picked out one or two models. I dont mind spending up to the £1000 mark (although mum only wanted me to go for the Rockhopper SL). I have some cash kicking around, plus was given some by family members as a congratulations for a good final degree result.

He was very keen on the Rockhopper bikes (£699 - £999), but also mentioned the 2010 FSR XC (in the sale at £999). There was also a Marin Northside Trail (£700), Marin Hawk Hill (£750), Orange G3 (£750), GT Avalanches and some others I cant remember.

I was drawn towards the FSR as my ACL is buggered and was thinking that a full suspension setup would provide a more forgiving ride, but Im not 100% on this.

Whats hot and what's not out of that lot? Would the FSR really be all that beneficial? Anything else worth considering or are they all pretty much the same?

I know I can buy cheaper online but would rather support my LBS, plus they will do servicing and its easier to go to them when something goes wrong with it.

Your Mum is buying you a new bike? 😯 I stopped buying bikes for my lads when they grew taller than me 😳 Am I a bad mother?

Nah Im buying it myself, but she's giving me the green light to spend the money instead of moaning about it like she usually does. Last bike my mum bought for me was a Raleigh Nitro about 17 years ago 😆

😆

Personally I'd go for the FSR but I seem to have an aversion to hardtails at the mo'. Bike Scene have a bargain older FSR frame only on sale which may be worth a look - only available in small though.

I spotted that frame when I was in there, looked very nice indeed but after 4 failed build projects the time has come just to buy new 😳 I am really drawn towards the FSR I must admit.

Had a little look online and found some others at Rutland Cycling, so now I have the following to add to the collection:

Giant Trance X4 & X5
Lapierre Tecnic FS700
Kona One20 Deluxe
Sunn Wisdom X3

All under £1,000. I really have no idea out of this lot

Does she want to adopt me?

I need a new bike and will have cheaper tastes than you.

Personally I wouldn't spend less than £1500 on a FS, but thats my opinion. You'd get a MUCH better equipped HT for 1K.

Why would you want to be adopted by my mum? She's not buying me a new bike. I am buying a bike out of my own money.

All she has done is give me the "OK", the "thumbs up", the "green light" to spend money on a new bike without any fallout of "thats too expensive", "what do you need that for?" or "that was a waste of money".

can i laugh that you have a degree but need your mums permission to buy a bike with your own money... you should have just left out the mum bit and asked about the bike 😆

Laugh all you want, but I can assure you I dont need "permission". As posted mere seconds earlier I can buy what I want but this time I wont get any nagging, any comments, any bullshit about it.

Keep up FFS

I understand I just still find it funny! oh and the FSR is a good bike, I had the original 2005 version, it was great but so are some of the other ones you mention.

Why not buy a second hand full bike?

Loads if bargains come up on here, your £1k will go a lot farther

Would rather buy new for peace of mind (and warranty cover)

Thanks

The FSR looks like a decent bike, though if it was the one that was previously £1,100 then you might be able to get a bit more money off. I'd be wanting to pay about £900.

Yeah there's better deals online, but if you value your LBS' support then I think you;re sensible to want to stick with them.

Don't get bothered by the teasing, it's only meant in fun.

Congrats on your degree.

If you get the chance to ride any of these, even just around the car park, it will help. Size/fit really matters. Then just follow your instincts.

Didnt think about a test ride, I might give them a ring and see if they have a demo model or will let me take one for a quick spin.

Thanks, Ill see if they can shuffle on the price a little.

I'm very drawn towards the FSR I must admit. Will see how it rides if I can get a test ride.
