hi all , any help and suggestions much appreciated, I'm currently bike-less and have been for approx 6 months after selling up to fund my daughter's surprise holiday, now hoping to get something else but budget is very limited (circa £600) , can't decide whether to go MTB or cross as will be planning on using to commute to work which is approx 7miles each way with a mix of off road and road ..... Appreciate the possibilities are endless just looking for some opinions that's all , cheers in advance

It depends whether you want to use the bike for riding outside your commute and what type of riding

Used is the way to go for that money whichever route you go down.

Gravel bike, shortish forked HT, XC/downcountry biased FS? Which would you get most use out of?

When you can stretch to it, two sets of wheels will open up your options

That's a good shout on 2 sets of wheels actually ....

Yep would want to use for weekly rides , based near Woburn Woods so mainly XC riding really and also enjoy a bit of bikepacking aswell .... Previously had stooge speedball, Singular Rooster and Puffin fatbike , one one SS , Genesis IO SS, Cotic Flaremax ....

Cheers

I picked up a second hand but hardly used 2020 Orange Clockwork Evo recently for £550. 130mm forks, Sram GX/NX mix, dropper post and RS Revelation forks. Just the job for you I reckon?

I bought it so I can upgrade the forks and wheels then swap them on to my Spur when I want that to be less XC or the Clockwork more XC in the winter slop and so far it's proving to be a versatile bike.

Sounds like you found a good 1 there , did you find it on STW classifieds or eBay etc ?

There's a Stooge Mk1 in the classifieds for £600. It's been there for a couple of weeks so might have sold but doesn't seem to be marked as such.

29er Hardtail all the way for that kind of budget...

How tall are you and where are you based? I might have something for sale inside your budget very soon...

Mix of road and off road should have me on a MTB unless it is very smooth.

I use an on one Vandal with a 36 tooth chain ring, rigid fork and slick ISH tires for my 4 mile on road or 8 miles mostly on gravel for a longer route home.

I'm sure you can find a on one scandal/ vandal/ big dog second hand for that price.

Yeah, well pleased. It was originally listed for more, had dropped a bit then I made an offer that was accepted. Second hand bikes just aren't shifting so it's worth chucking in an offer for a bike over budget. I got it from a local Facebook group.

I also know a bloke who sold a 650b Orange Crush for similar recently. He'd ridden it approximately 5 miles and it was as new! He had paid £1600. 😖

Milton Keynes is about 90mins away so not too far.

Its a Large sized Merida Big Trail that I’ll be selling, bit of a custom build from a frame I bought as new condition then never ended up using myself… PM me if it was of interest.
