Behind the mini-Tesco near the Broadfield on Abbeydale Road -
Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative.

Shame for butterworths i'd say, some competition for JE James

Is Butterworth's still in Hillsborough? They should retain business, I'd have thought.

What about Langsett's?

YAY! down the road from me... and I've been pondering for quite a while (since I saw Tesco were opening in the old car dealer there) that this would be ideal for a bike shop!

i'm not a fan of Langsetts though, and I've not had great experiences in other EBC stores... though we shall see!

for my road bike.

full RRP for some crud racer guards as it happens.

seemed like the perfect LBS purchase as i had a 70 mile road ride to do that morning, and it was sleeting.

they're REALLY good for the record.

I find this interesting that EBC are setting up in Sheffield. People have said for years that JEJames are rubbish, but they had the regional dealerships tied up. Obviously EBC have their own dealerships nationwide and therefore the buying power to muscle in.

Tis indeed a shame for Butterworth's if they go under, but has to be a good thing for Sheffield bikers.

the story behind the two butties was that they were brothers who fell out years ago or something along those lines. the hillsborough one is a completely different shop to the abbeydale one and although road biased are reasonable with their service.
i've never got on with langsetts, dunno why always felt like i'd got sh*t on my shoes when i walked in.
we'll see how long it lasts, to be honest i think the butties won't suffer that much as it's a very different type of clientelle!

I think one of the problems with Langsetts is they think they're a really good bike shop, but know they aren't. The workshop is good but always busy, and unless you like Scott they have no stock.

it sounds like a good kick up the ar53 that all of the sheffield bike shops need.

attention bike shop owners/managers! - all i want is a friendly shop where i can buy things from, and get work done without buckets of hassle.

hold some things in stock, return my phone calls even once, manage to not lose things i bring in for service, and don't take the p155 with the pricing, and you'll have a customer for life.

(i know you can't compete with CRC for pricing, and i don't care)

it's not funking difficult surely?

nickhart.
A.E. Butterworths on Abbeydale Road - Owned by Albert Butterworth, his eldest son Dave worked there.
Albert died leaving son Dave on his own - middle son Tony takes leave from merchant navy to help Dave out.
One year(ish) later Tony takes over shop on Catchbar Lane Hillsborough and stays there until Nov' 2001 when he retired, I bought the business.
Tony and Dave never fell out. Dave died 20 ish years ago - leaving his son, Matthew, to run the business.
I've heard the brothers falling out story many times - it's just an urban myth - no truth whatsoever.

ahwiles.
My arse has been well and truly kicked - just out of interest, when and how did we last not live up to your expectations? We are lovely people just trying to do a job and make a living.

not sure if adam is referring to you butter's or not. certainly i agree with his sentiment with regards to a certain other sheffield shop (not you guys, who im afraid i have never used)

one shop in particular is the most bizarre experience of willing customer/unwilling staff i have ever experienced. i am known for buying kit the second i want it, yet on more than one occasion have gone in to buy stuff, and been so underwhelmed i've just come home.

real shame.
