I have currently an GT i-drive5 which was bought to replace the i-drive 4 that i had which kept craking frames. I feel that the bike is overkill for me, in that it has 5 inches of travel and i dont do it justice. My riding style is a bit of every thing but i do tend to keep my wheels near the ground. I would ideally like to get my self something more like my 4 was such as a giant anthem x but they are too much. I will have around £1000 to play with. I have thought about some thing like the Boardman but agian it seems to be amied at the slacker side of things. I do have the option of upgrading my GT with new forks and some bits to make it lighter (already have Mavic crosstrail wheels) and was thinking of some revelations reduced to 130mm. What would you do? go second hand but with the worry of not knowing what the bike has been put through or looking at something else/

i'm in a similar spot...had 2 bikes but one got stolen but now i'm feeling flush as the insurance has paid out...i'm a bit reluctant to buy another bike as i dont want to leave one in the shed again in case the thieves try their luck again...my other options were to still buy a new bike and then sell the other one off or just use the money to upgrade the current one...having looked at the bikes of choice there are a lot that appeal to me but none that stand out....there are always little things that bother me..mostly the spec..such as i dont like the standard brakes or the forks arent what i'd want etc...i know i'm being a fussy so and so but at the end of the day i dont want to shell out a big amount on a bike then have to swap bits that i dont like...the expense isnt the issue but the hassle is....
so i'll be spending tomorrow in the lbs looking for some nice upgrades!!
130mm on the gt is about the norm for a lot of full sus bikes nowadays and if you like the bike then it may be worthwhile just upgrading it...at some point you may come across a frame you really like and then all you have to do is transfer all the parts over...
