[#1535085]

It was my first ride on a 29er tonight and I'm pretty impressed - not totally bowled over but impressed non-the-less!

A few comments...
• you can climb on a 29er - I think I'd actually have been quicker if it wasn't for the fat draggy tyres. I normally like my tyres with a lot less tread.
• a rigid 29er is still very much a rigid bike - punishing when it got rocky!
• its great on towpaths, you just barrel along!
• those small movements of the bike you make by adjusting your body position need to be exaggerated a bit more on a 29er (I got myself into trouble a couple of times by not moving enough!)
• it doesn't feel noticeably more sluggish than my normal bike.

Nice job. One of the most understated and classy bikes on here for a while.

I like it. Personally I think 29ers are ace - new build on the way, obviously not finished yet 😐

XL balance bikes

😆

All I could manage tonight - rest will get done at the weekend. Or perhaps I should aim it down hill and go for it?!

I can't think why I'd buy a 26er again.

29ers are getting too popular, it's like they grow on trees around here

Cheers for the comments - its actually the cheapest bike I've ever bought. At £230 for the basic bike these DiamondBacks are a steal! Obviously this has been modified a fare bit with parts from my parts stash.

I have loved all the 29er's I've had over the past 12 months but the Banshee Paradox is the best by far.

Try a short chainstayed 29er and it will blow you away, i couldn't believe the difference it makes. 😯

Nice looking bikes btw Clink & muffin-man 😛

I like the colour, but unless you are like 6ft5 I really really really don't get the whole 29" thing. Reminds me of american cars - not really designed to go round corners.

I'm not saying its wrong, just more I can't see the point.

Edit - I'm not trying to be negative to provoke a reaction (ie trolling) more I'd love someone to explain what these bikes are good for compared to a normal bike

I like that, in fact, seeing the (relatively) low front end, the bar ends, the rigid forks, and...sniff...the old fashioned use of actual GEARS brought a nostalgic tear to my eye. 🙂

Tootall - I suppose thats the problem that I've not had chance to ride one, but I don't feel the urge. However I sense a big following of this wheel size so wonder what I am missing out on and where i would ride one.

How do they handle?

I've seen some good looking 29" wheeled bikes but that isn't one of them. It seems that it can look good on larger framed bikes but rarely on smaller ones.

thats really nice - where did you get that from ?

i think its a myth spread about by the magazines that 29ers don''t accelerate quickly...

btw Tim - do you still live at the same place ? I still have your tyres !

Hi Justa

Yep, I still live at the same place!

I got the bike from Rutland Cycles ebay store...

Not being evangelistic about it, I've had one for a matter of a couple of months and bikes are bikes. However, my Karate Monkey has a shorter wheelbase than friend's full-sus 26ers, and handles absolutely lovely. For whatever reason (I'm not about to pontificate about geometry stuff I don't understand) it corners extremely well. It rides in very much the same way as my rigid 2000 Lava Dome, except that it really does seem to roll better. A mate who threw a leg over it declared that it was "really fast" and he was coming from a Meta 5.5 and hasn't really ridden rigid bikes since the 90s.

Clink,

That's the only other Big Mama i've seen so far. Had mine since last August and love it. I also have the bolt thru reba's and they are excellent. Is yours a large? Mines an XL and it's a very big bike. I'm running 120mm travel at the front but may well reduce it to 100mm at some stage as it can go a tad light up front on climbs. Mine's been pretty faultless so far but then i didn't really ride it much through the winter (used the HT) so it's only done 350 miles so far.

Did you get it cheap at Speedgoat in their sale? I got my frame and forks from the states as it saved me over £500 all in.

You should send Rutland a pic of yours to use, they will sell out in hours.. the Picture on the advert is awful, is it the Diamondback advertising shot? Dont they want to sell any?

I like it a lot... what a bargain.

Yes - they do grow on trees!

Nice bike Muffin man - but fail on the clown wheels! 🙂
[img] [/img]

Mine has a shorter wheelbase than my 26er and feels like it accelerates faster than my FSR 26er, though this may be a fully rigid vs full suspension thing. Goes round corners very well.

Came from Bike29 for $599 - absolute bargain! 😀

I think Salsa are discontinuing it, but every review I've read (here and states) has been positive.

another big mama coming my way, $599 from bikeman.com, definitely an impulsive purchase. i'm going to use the parts currently on my sir9 (1x9, 100mm reba, tubless flows, 660mm low rise bars, 80mm stem, slx brakes). never owned a full sus bike but ridden a few on hire. depending how it all goes i might have an air9 or a sir9 for sale.

It has been highly modified from base spec so the pic doesn't show the actual bike they sell - I just looked on it as a cheap way to get a frame, forks, wheels, tyres etc., so I could try a 29er out. I've now got to sell all the ss stuff and cable discs that came on it.

Yep, that would be good! It will be a few weeks before I can make it though as I'm in the middle of putting a new patio down so my weekends are taken up with that.

How's the house hunting going - will you be moving up my way?

Gutted the Big Mama is so cheap now but that's life i guess. I paid $1250 for my frame but by the time i paid all my duty and postage and got the Reba's as well i still spent less than the £1400 they were asking for the frame alone in the UK so i was happy enough. Strange if they are discontinuing it as all the reviews have been favourable.

Rides really nicely but isn't what you'd call super light. Mines around 31 lbs but that is an XL frame.

PS - if either of you want to buy a spare set of mech hangers let me know as i have two spare sets and only really need one....

Hi Muffin Man,

Been looking at one of those for a while now. Yours looks lovely. Just a quick question on sizing, what size frame is yours, the 18" or the 20" version. I'm about 6'2" and run 19 or 20" frames on my other bikes. Do you think the 29" wheels make a difference to the frame fit/sizing?

Thanks

Hi Country_Gent

I just ordered the same size as I normally ride (18"). Their eBay site says that this should be like a 20" bike but the dimension are nigh on identical to my 18" Inbred - the reach is pretty much the same, and even the seatpost is sticking out by the same amount! From my limited experience the wheels don't alter the size of frame you need.

I'm 5'10" btw.

Thanks Muffin Man, just wanted to check the frame top tube length wasn't massively extended my moving to 29" wheels.

CG, if its close in dimensions to an Inbred, then its also close to my 18" Scandal, we can tweek my bike about to see how it fits you if you like.. In fact you can borrow it for a few rides, however you might just melt down your Cotic after an hour on a real bike, and you dont need 2 retro bikes anyhow...

Tinsy, my Cotic is a classic and I wouldn't change it for anything, least of all your On-One. Let's be honest, both you and Munro have had to get them powder coated to stop people from recognising them!

Patios?! Heh, every house we're looking at I keep thinking, "Well, that'll have to come up!" 🙂 And if you're building a patio i guess things must be looking up for you which is great news! We're looking in Belper, Kilburn, Horsley, that sort of area and Ashbourne as a wild card

No probs bout waiting a couple of weeks. My ex has asked for the boys 1 weekend a month and - after making sure i get extra holiday time - i've agreed. Which means for the first time in 4 years i'll be able to do one weekend a mpnth. Most of my riding's grabbed midweek when work's quiet.

Let me know when you're done and we can sort it out from there.

Justa? How about you? I'm completely out of shape so it'd be a nice leisurely pace if you could put up with that?
