I know it aint gonna be very scenic, I know it goes through some not too nice area's, but is it worth doing.
my Mrs wants to ride it on Saturday, rather than watch a certain race start.
The Barnsley section isn't too bad. Mainly disussed railway/canal towpaths. You can always detour up to Silkstone common and then go via Penistone/Oxspring, Wortley, Wharncliffe and into Sheffield that way which might be more interesting than Hoyland/Tankersley/High Green, but yeah it's probably not the most scenic of routes.
But the detour to Penistone/Oxspring would miss Wentworth? I would vote to keep to the N-S route.
Watch out for the pipeline works by Meadowhall, you may have to come off the Five Weirs route for a short stretch just after the Vue Cinema/Oasis.
The old Barnsley canal is a great stretch, contrasts well with the wastelands elsewhere.
Yes it would miss Wentworth.
I'd not considered that, there are a few options once you get up there I think.

I'd class it as an ok, flat, tour of decaying post industrial Yorkshire.
Better places to go for a ride.

That's just an excuse to go to the pub 😉

she wants to visit the Tap, on Sheffield station.... 😆
Nice pub on the green at Heath near Wakefield, a choice of two pubs in Wentworth and then the Tap. Yes! What bike race?
