[#2054322]

I just clicked on a link on a thread here (the subsidence one) and my PC went a bit mad.

Something called Smart Security seems to have loaded itself and at the same time has prevented access to Microsoft Security Essentials. I've googled it and it seems to be a trojan that wants me to pay $50 to buy a trojan protection suite.

Anybody had this or know how to get rid? It's the first virus or trojan I've had in about 6 years, and only 3 weeks since I installed MSE. Co-incidence? Maybe not.

do people not have protection against such things? AVG picked it up.

I pity you! These trojans are a 'mare.

I used this -> http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
Followed by this -> http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php (update defintions when installed and do a full scan)

Then perform a full scan using your AV tool.

You may need to boot into windows safe mode with networking if the trojan stops you running/downloading the above.

Good luck!

I can assure you AED is a real business and Tim is super normal and not trying to kill your PC's.

Must be some internet weirdness.

Well, just as I was about to re-load windows, Microsoft Security Essentials burst into life (having previously been blocked by this trojan) told me I had a problem with "Smart Security" and proceeded to wipe it off the machine.

Well done MSE. I think.
