So just like the intelligent, planning guy that I am, I got some new wheels for my Whyte M-109 and put 29" WTB Vigilante 2.3" on them too, tubeless, which took forever.
Then I realised the rear doesn't fit in the stupidly tight chainstays. Nice. I've had On One Smorgasbord in there before and 2.25" Nobby Nics but I was looking for another good all-rounder that can handle itself in mud but not be too draggy. Maybe around 2.1" - 2.2" (albeit I know all tyre measurements are somehow very different!
And yes, I had already thought about buying a new frame instead, but that's too silly for even me.
Ground Control 2.1 is fine with some room to spare for mud.
Normally run a saguaro 2.2, but when it gets mucky switch to the 2.1 ground control as it gives significantly more mud room in a M109 and is better in mixed mucky conditions too.
Magic, thanks very much. I remember that name from my past! It looks really good.
Bontrager 2.2 either XR4 or XR3
Careful with the Bonty's, they come up rather large compared to other brands.
Hang on while I go out in the cold and measure mine...
2.2 XR4 on a 24mm rim;
55mm wide at 42mm height from the rim. Centre of tyre is 52mm high from the rim.
WOW, thanks! No need to go and get cold for me but much appreciated. Sounds like I should play it safe and buy a 2.1", looking like a Ground Control.
I have a Bonty Mud XR on mine - it's a 2.0 so loads of mud clearance. Fantastic tyre and went up tubeless like a... really easy thing.
