The David Beckham saga is pretty good for fallen heroes. From national hero, to scapegoat (Argentina sending off) and eventually back to national treasure.

Gary Glitter, well he's not Jimmy.
Ben Johnson

a bit of puff

I think 400lbs of the stuff constitutes more than 'a bit'!

Abi Titmus was destined to be a proper telly host before she got involved with John Leslie's video camera?

One of my class mates was annoying me a couple of weeks ago (she is south african) so I asked her which south african president abolished apartheid. Her answer - Nelson Mandela.....

Anyway - are there not a lot of corruption allegations surrounding Nelson Mandela?

Pook, she'd given up nursing to be a roving reporter for Richard and Judy, then got sacked when the grot film was 'released'. Though to be fair, since then she's been treading the boards and working her way back up doing a bit of acting. /stalker.

John DeLorean's life had some interesting ups and downs. Certainly had some highs, darling of the Thatcherites in the 80's, at one time employer of around 2000 people in Northern Ireland, maker of arguably one of the most iconic cars ever made.
P&**ed it all away, and ended up in a dodgey hotel room trying to sell a suitcase full of cocaine ..... legend.

No one mentioned David Millar - <opens can of worms> he's also a good example of how to climb back onto the pedestal (IMHO).

How about OJ Simpson

That's who i thought of too. Hard to top going from all-American hero to wife killer. Lance might be a bit of a c**t but he's never killed anyone to death by stabbing.

Barrymore? 😀

Richard Nixon - from bringing the Vietnam war to an end to being impeached

Lenin - not sure the Stalin-era purges or the Stasi are what he had in mind.

Asil Nadir - British business hero to convicted fraudster

John Daly (golf).

I like the Richard Nixon reference as well. A few more.....

Vladimir Lenin

Lord Kitchener (from K of K to a recruiting poster for mass killing)

Kyle Strait

Marvin Gaye

Hermann Goering (dashing WWI war hero becomes obese, drug-fuelled anti semitic psychopath).

Sean Connery when he made a comeback as Bond after George Lazenby in 'Never Say Never Again'

Elvis Presley

A bit of a mix of seriousness there, but I think they all fit the bill.

Oh and I'll throw in David Lloyd George as well.

Consensus-forming war leader embroiled in all sorts of stuff.

Have a bit of dig around Maundy Gregory, Victor Grayson and the sale of peerages - you'll see some things never change.

The boxer Prince Naseem Hamed though I concede, as someone pointed out above, he was a boxer and not really a 'hero'.

Strange how most answers to the question (initially) seem to be sports 'stars', interesting.

There was a brilliant industrial chemist by the name of Midgeley who was feted in his day for his ground-breaking discoveries. Two that were deemed to be the 'best' were tetra-ethyl lead (TEL) in petrol and CFCs. He couldn't have foreseen the CFC one (although the lead issue might have raised some concerns at the time).

Anthony Eden.

OJ Simpson.

Michael Schumacher.

Sorted:

Modern heroes = celebrity - Warhol: famous for 15 mins blah, blah, blah - John Terry, Lance, Glitter - corrupted by ££, fame, power.

True heroes = sacrifice - 'The Few', B of Britain, Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi etc (explaining why Olympic athletes are seen as more heroic - perception that they're amatuers?)

We can all be heroes (for 15 mins) - just takes a bit of sacrifice.

Thanks
