So a work bonus has me thinking I could buy a Genesis Day 1 decade for pootling, and canal towpath days out with Junior. I don't have a cross bike, but I do have 2 road bikes (Good & winter) and 2 MTB's (29er FS & 26 HT). So its different/niche, SSCX and will allow me to go up & bridleways a bit more, something different.
Now, Mrs K says I can do what I need on the 26er, and more poignantly she bought me the (Ti) frame for my 40th, so why would I just leave it not in use...?
Your arguments in my defense please...?
If you aren't brave enough to argue with her then I'm certainly not.
Good luck.
Nope. No help here.
single speed/fixed Day 1 would be less desirable to thieves and more practical for leaving outside when you have to chain it up outside the jewellers and florists regularly?

Fair point!

ah ha, although I'd have to keep some budget aside.
Should have posted on Mumsnet really, but YABU for what it's worth.
Stick a set of CX wheels in the Ti frame? Not helping your argument but it does get you another niche, it'll be no slower than a CX bike and just as handicapped off-road.
I found a singlespeed with the kids was a pain - anything uphill and you tend to have to attack a bit on an SS when the kids are going to sit and spin.
Not saying don't get another bike but maybe choose something different.
Maybe a dutch bike if it's just wet canal paths and stuff? guards and a rack, upright position, gears.
Tough one for sure.
But I love your rambling threads so I'll have a stab at input.
The Genesis Day One is a nice bike, it's a little heavy for a SSCX'er (it is, c'mon.. it is) but it's more than that.. it really is down to the flexibility of the bike. It can be used for all sorts of terrain, including the occasional SSCX race (and there are a few rattling the courses or S'th England) Bridleways, SIngletrack, Crappy single lanes and going AWOL.
But then all your other bikes fulfil those criteria admirably.
I understand the dilemma of the Ti 26'er.. thats a keeper so always take that out of any bike N+1 dilemma and reduce your quiver to 3 then think about other bikes.
I'm never going to tell you what to do with your money, but if it was me with a bonus I'd probably spend it on the Family. That may not be what you wanted to hear.
I personally think 4 bikes should be enough to cover all bases unless you are really serious about a certain discipline.
As above - spend your bonus on the wife/kids..
I assume money in general isn't an issue - if so you have no argument - otherwise 4 bikes isn't enough
You have a scenario where you will use it.
It's only money and will give you pleasure
It's your hobby/interest/keeps you fit/sane etc
The hardest part is justifying it to yourself

Really???????????
Mrs K is right. A dedicated pootling and kids ride bike??
If she is right and you are not using the ti 26er, then sell that. Add in your bonus and get something you really need.

I see you cunningly cut the last bit of my statement off -

I'm sure you can use the 26" HT for riding round the park with the kids?
Bin the winter road bike and get an 'adventure' bike that covers multiple jobs? (Arkose working for me)

Very good point, 'cept half of the bonus already went that way so I save 50% for me...
But you are right, I think I'll put towards a upgrading the family Holiday instead.
Surely you need a 29er HT given the amount of XC you plan on doing?
Thats what the 29er is for (24lb Anthem).
^ HT How many of your precious watts are you wasting with FS on flat/non technical/short courses?

I'm of the opinion that 4 is right for me (although I have 5 and could do with getting rid of the old 26er singlespeed)
Summer road (for those club runs and alpine climbs)
29er hardtail (general XC and winter MTB)
650B Enduro (bike parks, alpine downhills, and uplifts)
CX for winter road/touring/bridleway slaying duties.
OP - ditch the winter road bike....
Would life be easier if you just stripped down the 26" Ti frame, polished it up, and hung it on the wall?
If it helps, I've just gone hit buy on N+1. Justification, it's going to make me faster, probably ๐
5 is about right for me too:
Summer road bike
Winter road bike
CX bike
29er MTB, likely short travel FS
Cargo bike.
Right now I'm missing the MTB...and would like to upgrade my CX bike...and my cargo bike...
I only have one bike.
The other two don't count as they are for banging around on.
You should use that logic (and stand well back..)

She saved 1/3rd of her salary every month for a year to buy it for me, for me to not use it?

In that case - you have enough bikes and need to ride the Ti HT more - and keep reminding yourself how lucky you are.
Sack the winter road bike and get a CX and a set of road wheels.

This.
I can understand her being upset that you're looking to get something else and consign the Ti bike further down the list of 'bikes I ride regularly'.
Tell her it will make you a better man/father/lover.*

A very aptly timed thread
C2W coming up at work
I have 4 bikes, 3 in the garage (so easy access), 1 in the shed (so not)
HT 29er
Rigid SS 29er (El Mariachi so could be HT or geared)
Gravel bike turned into a commuter
the shed bike is a road bike converted to SS and flat bars
My challenge is I can't really get 4 bikes in the garage. Already have it full of stuff plus a motorbike
Was actually thinking about a brompton as I quite fancy one and it wouldn't take up much space!
Road bike would make sense but don't know when I'd actually ride it
Cargo bike would be great but again, wouldn't be ridden that much and they're not exactly small...
Ben, just get a bigger shed.

Despite what she says I think Mrs K would be quite upset if the Ti HT was either sold or consigned to the wall. Sweamrs is a cyclist as well and I'm fairly sure even she would be a bit put out. In fact I know sweamrs would be as I've been in a similar situation. When we got engaged she felt it was a bit unfair that I "had" to buy a ring so she brought me a Ti-inbred frame. (26 wheels etc). Eventually that bike got so far down the list it was being used for commuting / hack bike and then the inevitable happened and it got stolen. We were both quite upset despite knowing that it it had been well used and wasn't actually worth that much.
What's to stop you SS'ing the Ti and fitting some Jones bars or similar to make it a bit more CX like?
Now, Mrs K says I can do what I need on the 26er, and more poignantly she bought me the (Ti) frame for my 40th, so why would I just leave it not in use...?
A) It has too much sentimental value for you and you don't want to wear it out
or
B) It has desperately unfashionable wheels, all the other cyclists are laughing into their sleeves when you ride past, and posting pictures of you riding it in threads that also include pictures of bikerfox, the paperclip bike and George Bush on a trek. Continuing to ride it just because she bought it for her will make you look hen-pecked and mollycoddled and that means you either have to buy a new bike, file for divorce or do a Reggie Perrin.
She saved 1/3rd of her salary every month for a year to buy it for me, for me to not use it?

Or you need to leave newspapers lying about, open at the recruitment pages, with higher salaried jobs circled in biro and drop hints about how its going to be your birthday again soon
@Rusty Spanner - good idea, but don't really like the idea of keeping nice bikes in the shed, hence the one that's in there
Next house needs a bigger garage for sure though, mine is Model T size
1st world problems and all that
I had a very short stint with 2 bikes, felt like the garage was huge. oh well...

Lol!
Just buy it and tell her it could be worse as a bloke on the internet has nine.
Disclaimer: I have no wife or children, this may or may not be linked to the repayments on your mortgage or the ownership of that many bicycles.
Just tell her you are settling on n+1 because you considered n+2 to be greedy and extravagant
Tell her the fact that you no longer love the ti bike has taught you a valuable lesson about the shallowness of material possessions and that buying new bikes doesn't provide the lasting happiness you once believed it would.
And then explain that's why you need another bike.

^^This^^
I have to operate a one in/one out policy following negotiations with the management, the peace is more or less maintained with the limit set at four bikes.
Setting a cap and figuring out which of your current collection isn't quite seeing the use it perhaps should or could be replaced by something with a broader range of use can be quite good...
I actually reckon you can have too many bikes now, the number will vary from person to person, but sometimes you need to question if you are collecting bikes that will get used, or getting towards the borderline of hoarding...
