The cheaper one's well tested, the newer one looks like a better design but less people have used it so it's less of a known quantity. Still, I'd buy the new one meself. Might do actually.

I have 4 or 5 DX lighs and always go for Cree emitters for more lumedn per watt, as the 2nd model. 1st one has a Seoul. Battery pack problems in th reviews are a worrying but 18650 cells are cheap & easy from DX; I've had no problems with these.
Housing & reflector look good. Don't expect to get the claimed 900 lumens.

I recon I'll have to toss a coing. Its only around a tenner more for the new one with the better battery, but I like the UK plug on the other one and the advice about the better Cree emitter.

it isn't and is a Cree led

they are both the same ssc p7

Cree make the emitter in both and sell it to seol simi conductors who then put their own phosphor on .

they are just making it sound a better led. Bastids

Top one's got a much more robust handlebar mounting system. Bottom one's just got a rubber 'O' ring to hold it on the bar.

How about adding the 'older' design lamp with the newer battery, into the mix...

Newer mounts do look better than the old rubber band system, which does work ok to be fair. Either way you going to get a decent light no matter what you buy.

I am stumped by the sea of lumen emitting shiny things! The prospect of a hazardous charger freaks me out, can the 18650s be removed from the battery case, charged in a UK intended charger and re-installed? If not, is there something like that about? I've been considering a 2x18650 (double battery) Trustfire on a bike mount.

OK about to go for the top one. Can anyone recommend the best cheap rear light?

yodagoat - a couple of recommendations for cheap rear light.

For really cheap, these are great - Electron 4 led

The best cheapish rear light for me is the Blackburn Mars 3

I've also got a Smart 1/2 watt rear which is great until the weather gets wet - then it shuts down.
