I need a new multitool after forgetting it was in the bottom of a very muddy pack for a couple of weeks...

What’s good? Not too expensive as it will probably be a Father’s Day present.

what features?

have a topeak that's compact and goes in a little padded case, overall about the size of a car key. goes in the shorts pocket for short night rides when it is the only tool I carry. as a result it has had a few trips through the washing machine.

from memory has a 2,3,4,5,6,8, T25 and screwdriver.

however I'm in the market for a larger one that contains a chain breaker, spoke key and anything else useful if someone below has any suggestions.

I got the jetblack one as a result of this review and have to say it is mint. I have used the spoke key and the chain breaker and both work without incident.
It is out of stock in shops but I got it on ebay, £20!

Recently bought a crank brothers F15 to replace a Topeak alien 2, so far really happy I did, it's way smaller and lighter than the alien but still has every tool you could need when out on the trail.

ah, looks like the jet-black one can't be had anywhere..

If a big day, I'll take the Alien though it is quite chunky. Rarely need a Torx anyway.

Usually get by with a varying Park tool with several hex keys and some spanner bits. MT-1  https://www.parktool.com/product/multi-tool-mt-1?category=Multi-Tools#tabbed-section

and a retro Ritchey Compact Rescue tool mainly for the chain splitter..  CPR-5..

I lost a bit of my ancient Hexus so after much consideration, I bought another one. Not the best made but they're so good at the job.

I like the Birzman 20. Nicely made piece of kit

Carried a Topeak Mini (20 I think) in the backpack for a while now. Its the blingy gold one that just doesn't want to rust.

Met most of my trailside needs.

Make sure the chain breaker works with whichever type you are using 11sp 12sp etc

My little Topeak Hexus one has a chain-breaker and the usual assortment of allen keys, but none of these appear to be removable (as far as I can tell). How am I supposed to operate the chain-breaker without taking an extra allen key with me, or is there a trick for getting the right bits off?

Or am I just being stupid?

One of the tyre levers has an allen key that fits the chain tool.

I also have a hexus, but the chain pin has snapped and although replacements should be available I am struggling to find one for a good price. Some of it is rusty so I may just replace it. Whatever I get next will have replaceable chain tool pins.

Aha! Pity I've snapped that one and chucked it without realising then... 🙂

Park MTB-3. Hefty but has pretty much all the tools you need for trailside repair.
