Anyone know if can I run a standard 9 speed rear mtb mech with 10 speed STI shifters?

yes mechs dont care it is just a spring that moves according to the gear lever cable being pulled you can use anything as long as you keep with same manufacturers
10 speed one with 7 speed set up
9 speed mtb with 10 speed road
etc

Not strictly true Junkyard. A 10 speed Shimano MTB mech is not compatible with anything other than a 10 speed Shimano MTB shifter.

But in answer to the OP, yes a 9 speed MTB rear mech will work fine with a 10 speed road STI.

how ? it is just a spring you may be referring to chain width it can take but the mech is not indexed it is just a spring that can move freely pull it enough it shifts the shifter controls this - ignoring the effect of the actuation length - does it have a longer actuation? Have shimano gone all SRAM?
Knows nothing about 10 speed MTB tbh am I missing something ?

Can someone for once and for all please try this out - it's been raised enough times and nobody really KNOWS, we all just have educated opinions that happen to contradict. Call it a public service! ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes you can. Have used 105 10spd shifters succesfully with an XT 9spd rear mech. We tried with a 10spd XT rear mech and it didn't work.

Do you know which gen 105? There was a thread on here a few days ago which suggested that the latest gen stuff (?5700/6700 Ultegra/7900 DA) worked with 10sp MTB shifters.

If you want to get a much lower geared road set up you really need to stay 9 speed.

Another vote for .....10 speed shimano road does not work with 10 speed shimano mtb.

Actually you will find that with the exception of SRAM mechs are pretty well interchangeable. I can't list all the variations I have used to create a variety of combo's over the year but they all work. Campag/Suntour/anciet Simplex/Shimano. As long as the mech deals with the amount of chain needed no issues. Some take a touch of fiddling but nothing to worry about.

OK, what I want to do is get a new Shimano 10 speed mountainbike cassette, a Ultegra 10 speed Sti shifter and a 9 speed XT mech to get more range for touring. Is the 10 speed mtb cassette spaced the same as a road cassette? Any reason this wouldn't work?

Which is correct. The latest 10spd road and MTB stuff certainly has different cable pull to older stuff, hence won't work with 9spd MTB stuff. Older 10spd road kit will all work just fine with 9spd MTB though. Oh, and the spacing on all 10spd cassettes is the same, so 10spd road shifters should work just fine with a 9spd MTB mech and 10spd MTB cassette.

Only if you don't really care how good your shifting is and are prepared to spend hours keeping it in tune. The cable pulls and cassette spacing for Campag and Shimano are all different.
See http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3946 (sadly not yet updated to included newer Shimano 10spd - the info on C11 is also not fully accurate, as the rear mech geometry changed a little with that).

How odd ๐Ÿ˜‰

I used to run my cx with 9 speed stis and a 9 speed mtb cassette and it worked fine, I also ran an xt crank with two rings on but found I had to use a road front mech as an mtb one wouldn't work

The cable pull on Shimano 10 speed road STIs hasn't changed on the rear. So if you wish to use a 10 speed MTB cassette on a road bike you use ANY 10 speed road STI, a ten speed MTB cassette and a 9 speed MTB rear mech.

Thankyou Mister P. Seems like a cheaper way of doing things than going for a triple.
