Hi
I am trying to do some market research on mountain biking around the world and finding it rather hard to get information outside the UK. I was hoping some of you guys might know or have had some experiences that might help answer the questions below or have some useful links/pointers that might signpost me in the right direction. I have put a chunk of effort into this but struggling to get the goods. Would appreciate any help.
Which countries worldwide actively pursue mountain biking as a recreational sport? Ie which countries are worth investigating to assess their market potential.
How many formal bike centers are there in Europe/Eastern Europe/ Americas/ Australasia/Scandinavian?
Biking centers with uplift service in Europe and America and worldwide if there are any?
Mountain biking growth & trend figures for Europe/America/UK etc
What and where are the major meccas for mountain biking worldwide and what are their visitor numbers?
Cheers, Rols
Yeah I have had a good hunt around IMBA but couldn't find details required unfortunately.
Not trying to be funny but why?
Are you being paid to do this research?
I am trying to develop a new product and so I am putting a business plan together in order to try and source some funding. I need figures and data which will support my project and give me an indication of market size and potential. The project is still at very early stages and I need all the help I can get to get things off the ground.

Outside of the UK, I only have experience of Canada and the West Indies (St Kitts and Nevis, to be precise). The obvious answer with respect to Canada is 'yes', while in the West Indies I saw no trace of MTBing. Of the tourists that did come to the islands I was most closely connected with, they tended to be interested in diving. I expect there could be some real untapped potential there, though.

No idea regarding the Americas. Certainly by the time I had left (early 2003), I had not heard of any formal centres. This may be because the riding options are simply so vast that a there is no need for formal centres.

Both the Rockies and Laurentian ski resorts tend to use their ski lifts in summer as a for-profit service to MTBers.

No idea.

Too many to count in Canada. The entire North Shore in British Columbia; Whistler's big; Mont Tremblant in Quebec (which is owned and operated by the same people that run Whistler. The list could go on. And on. And on.
Is that the sort of information you want? Or are you looking for someting more specialised?
You have a product but no idea of the size of the market or the potential competition.
I'm in - where do I sign?
Just as a data point - I stayed in a resort in St Lucia that had a wee trail system through the jungle - half decent bike hire. It was a dedicated MTB trail - opened by Tinker Juarez as I recall. Just small, but was pretty cool riding through the jungle and did have a very difficult climb.Which countries worldwide actively pursue mountain biking as a recreational sport? Couple of grand and I will write your report for you. ๐
For Czech Republic you could try the Czech Mountain Bike Association
There's a trail centre meant to be opening here this year, but there's so many good forest tracks, I'm not sure it's really needed.
For africa you can bar everything but South Africa you might have some in other countries but South Africa is the only sizable market with people wanting to spend good money on it too.
Guys this is a great help. I don't mean to be greedy but more of this would be fantastic.
I wanted to identify the major mountain biking areas in the world and their retrospective stats, like visitor numbers, turnover, local & national economical impacts etc. My thought was this would be 7 stanes, whistler and port du soleil. I cant find anything on port du soleil?
SaxonRider, Yes a list of the main bike trail areas would be great. Ideally I would have the number of bike areas for any sizeable MTB participating countries which would indicate how much potential may exist there. I have identifies the following counties as having potential:
UK
South Africa
New Zealand
USA
Australia
Canada
Finland
France
Spain
Colombia
Slovakia
Sweden
Ireland
Austria
Italy
Portugal
Slovenia
Switzerland
Czech Republic
Estonia
Brazil
Germany
Poland
Croatia
Japan
