I wonder how these size up.  Whilst I hate paying for delivery - now free for £100 spend - these are a snip.

Pro level eh, so how many pros wear them?

I think I'll trust my noggin with a brand that does a little more R&D.

If they pass all the standards then they are as good as the named ones...so 13 quid for a helmet or spend a lot more for one that does the same thing...

If you're worried about brand image, just buy the Carnac one.  Also £13 and looks identical, even down to the POC Trabec-esque patches on the back.

Although helmets may meet a 'standard' not all helmets are the same and some protect better than others.

Spend thousands on a bike, spend pittance on protecting your noggin. You crack on boys and girls with your bargain I know what I'm doing.

I am on my 3rd one. No issues. Had a few offs and i have lived to tell the tale. Got 1st one about 5 years ago and replaced it after about 2years and a couple of crashes, the same with number 2. Got my latest one in the sale back in January. At that price you don't need to worry about crash replacements, just get a new lid......

But there are also 'open mould's helmets out there. You can buy un-branded or cheap brand for £30, or the O'Neil or 7IDP for twice or three times as much.

They are a catalogue pick arent they?  You could easily buy the same exact helmet for £60, it just comes with a life affirming brand sticker!

Dunno about protection, but I tried one of these on and it was horribly uncomfortable. Might fit your head shape better though, and at the price it's probably worth a punt.

Just bought an enduro and a road helmet for £13 each. Quite happy it'll be worth a go.Realised i've only had 2 helmets in the past 14 years, so need to start replacing a bit more often!

Interesting...

So Can you actually quantify for me how a Giro costing 4-6 times more is offers "better" protection?

There is a difference between "meets" and "exceeds" right!

I'm sure there is, but nobody claiming my safety is at risk for not spending 4x more seems able to tell me precisely what the difference is...

So tell me just how much harder can I smack my head on the ground in a Giro than a Carnac/OO lid and survive?

I’ve been wearing the XC one since Xmas and it’s bloody good.  Comfortable, looks the part and has stood up to a fair few branch/head interactions.

Anyone tried one of these as well as a Troy Lee A1?

I'm right on the edge of both sizes and I know that a M-L A1 fits great. Just don't know what size to try?

we've always been huge fans of slogging the climbs to earn the right to smash out the downhill section

Isn't that just "going for a ride"?

Counter argument to the idea that more expensive helmets offer better protection.

First, companies aren't allowed to advertise that they're better than a standard, only that they exceed it

So making a helmet meet the standard isn't very difficult - bowl with a few holes in about the right thickness, some margin to be sure and it'll likely pass. Those dimensions are well known so you just stick a sensible amount of material in and can be confident that it'll meet the standard.

So what about expensive helmets? Well they probably spend more time designing looks, weight and ventilation - all of these take design work which costs. Since you can't advertise about beating the standard, you design to it so that you can keep weight down and ventilation up.

Upshot is that expensive helmets are likely closer to the standard by design than cheaper ones that just stick plenty of material in to ensure a pass

Are these (and the identical Carnac) a better fit on rounder or narrower head shapes? Best fit for me has always been Specialized helmets but in a moment of vanity bought a Bell Super when they came out and whilst it's OK it's always been a bit wide at the sides compared to the narrower fit of the Specializeds. Just wondering how these compare?

Since you can’t advertise about beating the standard, you design to it

Im not sure about that. The standard is about being dropped from a height. Its very one dimensional. Giro, bell, kask etc etc are spending money to exceed these standards and create better performing helmets and self testing to multimdimensional impacts. The development of Mips, turbines, spherical stuff etc goes much further beyond what the standard even attempts to address that the standard is pretty much just a formality.

Cheers @flyingmonkeycorps for the feedback.

Also had a Bluegrass Goldeneyes and medium was a prefect fit. IXS medium was supposed to be the same size, but was so narrow, it wouldn't even go on my head!

Doesn't help that I don't really have anywhere decent locally to try any on. Love the fit of the A1, but it's so hot in this weather!

Carnac Podium SL and XC just arrived (amazingly fast delivery for OO/YODEL)...

Fit seems good, I have a "Giro shaped" head.

Two decent helmets for £30, I sort of wish I'd ordered extras, but they'll be another lot on discount within 6 months if I need one...

I've got the on one enduro helmet and I can report it's decent. Definitely worth the money assuming it fits you.

I'd buy another.

I think that I might try one of these for £15.99; they look reasonably decent although I don't know the brand.

Ok, mine arrived this morning. I ordered the XC helmets.

Compared to the Giro Hex ( medium) the size was great and spot on for me. The retention system is ok a d similar to the Giro retention system.

Quality - no better or worse than the Giro. Moulding is good and no rough edges.

Happy with the product.
