Been looking into getting 38 and 28 toothed chainrings to convert to a compact on the mtb (cue xc jey boy comments), but having difficulty finding a manufacturer that makes a 38 toothed outer ring that will fit shimano cranks.
However, middleburn do them. But I know nothing of middileburn chainrings. I know they do a chainrings in 2 varietys: standard or slickshift (pins and ramps). So I would want the outer ring, the 38 tooth one to be slickshift, and the 28 tooth one to be standard (right?).
Then they do 2 different finishings..
We offer two different finishes for our chainrings. The first is anodising which comes in black, silver, red or blue and the second finish is Hardcoat, a Teflon impregnated ceramic coating which only comes in grey
The red sounds quite nice, and would go well with my pro2 hub, but this teflon ceramic coating thing sounds like a good idea to stop/slow down wear. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with either? The ceramic coating does cost more..
Also, how are middleburn chainrings in general? Dont think I've ever seen anyone use them..
Middleburn chainrings are the best out there IMO, but I've found the hardcoat doesn't really last any better than the anodized ones.
Does the hardcoat make any difference then? Do you go for the normal anodized ones instead now?
Slickshift if you're going to use more than one ring, standard if you're running 1x9 or s/s.
I found the hardcoat didn't give much extra and I now use the uncoated slickshift which I find better than Shimano (XT chainset).....
Yeah, but I thought the slickshift only helps with shifting down, so theres no point having a slickshift inner ring?
Oh I dunno then, I run Middleburn outer/middle and Deore steel granny so use my slickshift rings up and down - didn't know it was only of use on downshifting ๐ณ
I've got a standard Middleburn chainring on my XT crankset(middle ring). It's performing well. When,or if the XT crankset ever dies,I would like to replace it with a Middleburn.
