MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Morning. I've two different maxxis tyres on 2 different bikes which I've noticed have started to wobble, ones a reckon and the other a dissector. Both exo. At first I thought the wheel was buckled but it's fine and it's the tyre moving side to side. Probably about 5mm. Google suggest it's fairly common, anything to worry about or best replace them?
Used to be able to warrantee deformed carcasses so may be worth a try first.
Yeah I warrantied at least one when it was actually contacting the seatstay. CRC didn't even blink.
Had it three or four times in recent years, can't remember what I did the other times.
I've been running a wobbly DHR II for months. I don't notice when I'm riding, but it's extremely obvious to anyone behind. I don't think it's a big issue really, but if it was a new tyre I'd probably get it replaced by the retailer. I've sent a couple back in recent years and never had any issue with getting them replaced.
I've just put a brand new dhf on the front that's been on a shelf* for ages annoyingly so can't go back, about 10mm of wobble.
Also the side walls are completely porous, I could not figure out why it wouldn't stay up, put it in a trough and whole thing weeps.
It'll end up in the bin I think which is infuriating.
*yes in the dark etc
I've had 2 or 3 start to wobble after heavy impacts but never from new. I did fix one by accident a few years ago. I took it off to bin it and slung it towards the wheely bin, I didn't get around to putting it in the bin so it lay flat on the tarmac drive for 3 or 4 days in the mid summer sun. When I went to put it in the bin it looked OK so I stuck it on the hardtail and the wobble was gone.
Worth a go if its not too bad before binning it I guess?

The slinging it at the wheelie bin or leaving it in the sun? 😉
I'm up for trying both mind given its new!

Buy a new one from the same shop, when it arrives send the wobbly one back under warranty for a refund!

Option 2 followed by option 1 😀
its about as common as breathing...
Exo carcasses are made of cheese strips. Other than that, best tyre there is..
Are they seated evenly - I assume running tubeless. I run tubes, but can find they don't always sit right until I inflate to 60 PSI and the bead then pops into the rim.
Thanks for the replies. I've contacted the supplier although it was from a German site so might be hassle. Once warped do they fail at all, ie a blow out? Going to ladybower tomorrow. Probably worth swapping out for something less wobbly lol
I’ve a Magic Mary that has had a wobble from new, I really should have sent it back, not sure why I didn’t!
I have also had quite a few Maxxis tyres develop a wobble after big drops, they’ve never failed spectacularly, rather they start to bulge then don’t seal on the rim.

Which German site did you buy from? I've had awesome warranty service from Bike24 and try to use them exclusively now. Bike-Discount.de used to be good for warranty but now not so much. R2 Bike don't even answer emails / the phone but annoyingly always seem to have those rare parts that I need so forced to use them sometimes.
[Old joke] Maxxis - the tyres that run true even if you ding your rim.
I had it on a DHF, but only after a good few kms use. I am surprised they still haven't fixed this issue, poor show given Maxxis are at the top of the price pile.
@devash was r2 bike unfortunately. Only place who has stock at the time of ordering which wasn't a stupid price.
Well if anyone wants a barely ridden 29x2.5 dhf in dh casing that has a crappy wobble and who's sidewalls won't seal I've a spare one...
I’ve had some warped Maxxis. Aside from low speed wobbles they were ok until worn out.
Porous? Check they are the tubeless ones. I bought an exo Maxxis in a closing down sale. Bled sealant like a colander. Checked the multiplicity of symbols on the side: no tubeless/tubeless ready ID. Gave it away and put on a Purgatory.
I thought wobbly tyres were the domain of Continental tyres a few years back.
I've had the wobble with Maxxis.
And the leaky sidewalls despite being TR.
Struggling to see why maxxis gets so much love.
Those issues apart, they do the other aspects of being a bicycle tyre well.
Quick update regarding my wobbly tyres. Emailed r2 bike who requested pictures of the remaining tread, after this they emailed shipping and customs labels to me. I dropped of at post office expecting not to hear much for a few weeks. 5 days later they have refunded me for my maxxis reckon (as I requested as no stock for month) and dispatch email for a new dissector which is with DHL on its way to me. Easier than I expected
