As per title really. My Granny ring on my touring bike is 30t and a smaller ring would be nice. Would a 24/26t shift OK up to the 39 middle?

Mechs have a max-capacity, e.g. this one 105 tripple mech is 20t so to an extent it depends on what the big ring is (and the mech), 24-44 is Ok, 24-50 won't work (the chain will clatter along the the bottom of the mech in the granny).

14 - 24/38 or 26/40 are typical it's not that more won't work but will get harder to shift.

My 105 triple front mech works fine with 26/39/50 and 105 STIs. (Crank was originally a 105 30/39/50)

I haven't tried going to a 24T granny, so I don't know about that.

What i want to know if 26/39/46 would work (I suspect it won't without changing other bits)

Thought I'd give a update on this. I bit the bulit & the postman brought me a 24t chainring from spa cycles. Turns out 24/39/53 shifts nicely with A huuuge range of gears.

Now I have a nice low climbing gear for loaded touring and I avoid cycling away from my girlfriend and as the roads ramp up neutralising any potential issues! Happy days!
