Was cleaning the bike up today when I saw a crack in the rear rim. It must be 8cm long.

Has anyone had any experiences of this? I thought the EX721 were indestructible. Obviously not.

Next question, if I got a Flow EX rim, could I reuse the spokes and nipples or would new ones be needed?

Thanks
Peter

Even if you swap out like for like on a rim, it's not advisable to reuse spokes and nipples, at least that is what every single reputable wheel builder has told me.

But it's likely a moot point anyway because rims tend to require their own spoke length matched to the hub.

That aside, that's a marvelous crack in that rim. Never seen anything like that before and it doesn't look like the rim has had a hard life. Have you asked about a warranty as it looks like a line of weakness in the metal that may be manufacturing defect?

@geetee1972.

I thought the same. The rims hardly have a mark on, and i dont use them for DH just for some trail riding so i was more than surprised.

How do i go about warranty?

Thanks

Take them back to the place you bought them from.

You only have to look at that one small section to know that you're not using them for anything like the abuse they were designed to take.

Cool! You do see quite a lot of 721s crack around the eyelets but I've never seen that.

Then count yourself lucky that you hopefully paid a lot less than retail for them ๐Ÿ˜€

That's the issue with second hand kit; no warranty. You could try with the distributor but don't be upset if they knock you back.

Think they are only good to about 50psi. What have you been running?

I'd be surprised if it was due to tyre pressure, that usually results in a crack closer to the bead hook. Like everyone else says, it looks more like a manufacturing defect, but good luck getting it replaced if you bought it second hand.

"swap out" ? what the hell are you talking about? next you will be throwing around phrases like "my bad". Try not to sound like a fool please ๐Ÿ˜†

Now closer to the point. This crack is in an unexpected position. My guess that it will have been initiated by one of the grooves in the rim. I would expect it to be a warranty issue but I don't thing you can reasonably expect that since the rims were used when you bought them.

As for reusing spokes. I think if a spoke has not had a great deal of use it would be safe to reuse it. Otherwise, maybe it could be some way through its expected fatigue life.

For replacing rims- if the wheel looks in good, reasonably fresh nick other than the crack in space and time, I'd happilly reuse 'em. If it's well worn, it might be a false economy.

The ERD of a Flow Ex is fairly different to a 721, 537 vs 532 (though, that's from a third party site, Mavic don't seem to publish it). Don;t know if that's within the reasonable scope with the spokes, maybe if you can fit longer nipples but it's got to be pushing it.

Meant in jest I know but still, ouch.

Indeed no offending intended, otherwise I wouldn't have purposely put in those mistakes. :D, but seriously my comment was not intended to be so harsh.
