I've been looking for a while and I'm planning to buy the crossmax sx wheels, before I pull the trigger anyone have first hand experience of these wheels pros and cons? I've seen a few second hand sets for sale but obviously worried they will be well worn so unless a near new set turns up I will probably be buying new.
Thanks

They're strong, stiff and not too heavy. We have a set on one of our 26" demo bikes (the wheels themselves are also available to demo). Main con seems to be the cost - but they're pretty decent value really - and non-standard spoke replacement, but Mavic spokes don't seem too hard to get hold of these days.

I have a set on my Nomad. As drovercyles said, they are very strong and pretty light. Totally love them. Spokes are easy to get hold of and cheap. They have been on for 6 months and have done mostly uplift days but still true and tight.

Genuinely appreciate the comments. I've had a look on line and the best price I can find is from the German sites £509!!! Doesn't sound to bad. Obviously if you google anything you can find negatives but was the rear Hub issues on earlier wheels? Or is their still an issue with pre load coming loose?

Run them for ages. Good hubs, rims a bit narrow compared to some, but much, much tougher than stuff like Stan's Flow. Mine have been light, stiff and trouble free. Come with valves and every possible type of adapter and thingy in the box. I hate white rims, bought them in spite of that, and they've been faultless. Would definitely recommend.

IF you're buying new, the newer Crossmax XL are apparently slightly better/lighter/wider/acer. They come bundled with Mavic branded tyres that I don't fancy for wet conditions though, which is a bit of a shame.

Older Mavic hubs were crap - the newer (ITS-4) design is not.

One thing to note - Manic do an extended warranty thing called MP3 - you can't do that if you buy from Germany, AFAIK

Like everyone else have said, the wheels are light and strong, although I have noticed a slight ding in my rear wheel, I think that may have happened when I got a flat at Innerleithen.

I had an issue with my rear free hub, again I don't think that was the hubs fault, I think I done up the bearing pre load too much, I have since changed to an XD drive free hub and have had no issues.

Used the 2011 versions, they stayed tight and straight despite abuse- expensive but strong.

2011 here too - super reliable hubs, bombproof rims and build, easy to run tubeless and surprisingly light.

Best wheels I've ever had. The new XLs have got a tough act to follow.

Yep, agree with the above, we've not come across any reliability issues with the newer hubs.

MP3 is an absolute no-brainer in my opinion, it doesn't cost much and gives you complete peace of mind that you will be sorted, should you destroy the wheels in e.g. a crash.

I don't think you'll find anyone in the UK advertising them below 10% off the RRP (so £594) but if you ask nicely someone might do you a bit of a deal - no-one is going to compete with the Germans on price I wouldn't have thought but your preferred dealer might meet you in the middle somewhere and you could then take out the MP3 package.

Bit skinny and the price is high. But otherwise grand.

For alternatives, my Lightbicycle carbon rims on DT240S hubs are going to cost me less, and will be much lighter, and wider. Remains to be seen about toughness 😉 Being able to get parts in any bike shop rather than being dependent on Mavic is nice too- but if you've got to have a factory wheelset, Mavic are the ones to have I reckon.

How long does it take for the bearing / adjuster to settle down on the rear ITS-4 hub. Had to nip it up a couple of times now.
Wheels were as new when I bought them so not many mile sin on them. (Crossmax Enduro)

I bought some of those German SXs and they are ace for the money! Used them primarily on the full suss on uplift days at BPW and Antur as well as XC. Super stiff and responsive and no issues with freehub. Also arrived within two days of order!
