When does a helmet become too manky and require replacement?

I've washed my pads out, but the strap properly stinks, is covered in salt rings and is as stif as cardboard!

The rubber bits on the Roc Loc 4 have gone all tacky and are now like something off Pat Sharp's Funhouse (for those that remember that)

Anyone recommend a washing method for helmet straps? I guess the washing machine is out of the question?!

I've always washed liners, pads, straps on motorcycle and cycle helmets with shampoo.

Seems to work and freshen them up nicely.
