Shocked, but glad to hear he's on the mend.

How long before we hear of a patient banned from Blackpool Victoria Hospital for arguing with everyone.... 😀

Get well soon.

Really relieved to hear the latest about Simon. I was just in front of him when it occurred.

I called for the ambulance and a guy who had come along for the day arrived on the scene. I was in the process of giving a location to the 999 operator when this guy started administering CPR. He worked for the fire service in Bolton. I think he was called James. He and Jo (lady cyclist) combined brilliantly to keep Simon going for 20 minutes until the first responders arrived with a defibrillator. 10 mins later the ambulance and paramedics arrived. I've only ridden with the group twice but in this short time it's clear that Simon is a great MTB man and enthusiastic group leader.
My thoughts are very much with him and his family and I wish him a speedy recovery. I just want you all to know that James & Jo deserve massive credit for their actions.

Posted by his son James yesterday on FB
Dad was awake for several hours ( on and off). He's confused but was able to recognise me and smiled when I told him his bike was fine. Still on ventilator but that may change tomorrow. I told him how everyone is rooting for him, he seemed to understand. He's been sedated again so he can sleep as lung infection is making breathing difficult and he was quite distressed, but otherwise positive.

Wow shocking news. Like many on here I have not met him but I've admired his photographs a lot and enjoyed his contributions. Hope you're back on you bike soon Simon.

Can any medics comment on the nature of a heart attack in someone who is a regular cyclist and therefore likely to be pretty fit? I think it would be a useful discussion here and help raise awareness of potential heart conditions that fitness won't prevent but could help reduce the impact of.

I remember as a youth riding the road, that the fittest and fastest vet in the club suffered a heart attack while on a Sunday club run in the hills and the doctors said it was because he was only because he was so fit that he survived.

Thanks for the great news Rich.

Maybe time for a separate thread to discuss our general heart worries further? Or perhaps something Singletrack and Dr Jon could cover in an article (together with CPR advice)?

Never met him either, but shocking news. Best wishes from me to him, get well soon x

And massive respect to the people who did CPR on him. I really hope that I can do that, should I be in that situation ever. I've had training, but query if I could do it in practice.

Just give him a camera, and the primal urge to take pictures of nurses bottoms will pull him through.

Latest update from his son James on fb:

I'm afraid dad is back on oxygen, they are doing what they can to manage his lungs, they have put him on his front again to help him breathe and get his stats up. He's been put on some more broad spectrum antibiotics but he's also back on sedation and noradrenaline. One of the boggies was his doctor today

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Fight it, SFB. Fight it. Don't let it win. Fight.

you know what he is like, he will just be dragging out the argument with death for his own pleasure.

Eeek - just imagine waking up in hospital, and seeing one of your bike buddies, wearing a white coat and stethoscope 😯 . No wonder he's 'confused' and needs 'sedation'

(Best wishes for a full recovery, Simon)

Do watch the Vinny Jones vid that clareymorris linked to earlier. Then if this ever happens on a ride you're on, you'll know what to do.
Because some people knew what to do, SFB is alive. Well done.
Oh yes...and calling the ambulance is the first and best thing you can do.

Likewise that St Johns Ambulance app posted earlier is well worth a look. Install and browse through as a reminder (rather than just relying on it when the time comes). I remember bits from doing CPR in Scouts (Cub Scouts in fact) but that was a *very* long time ago.

Once again healing vibes.

Ok, so who's bum gave him the heart attack? We must see pictures!

I don't think I ever agreed with sfb on anything but seeing as the bog trotters are such a large group must prove he's a decent bloke I'm real life™

Best wishes and well done to your fellow riders!

Simons brother has this evening reported that he's moving wards again for infection control purposes. He is still sedated but his breathing is improving, although he's not yet off the ventilator.

He's still got a long way to go, but 'stubborn Simon' is hanging in there.

Houns - I know that Simon will be reading this thread in a few weeks, and will no doubt in the first instance be overwhelmed by the messages of support, but will then feel depressed as he thought he'd previously managed to upset, antagonise and generally deter the entire online community, just because he can 🙂

I met him in person before experiencing him online, and its no coincidence that me, and everybody else who meets him this way, realise what an outstanding, admirable person he is, before sitting back with a wry smile watching him argue his way through thread after thread, playing with those who bite like a cat with a piece of string. 😆

Incredible performance from those that administered the CPR - really quite something. Very sad to hear the news and wish Simon well and a strong recovery.
