I have just extended my finances to buy a new frame but am trying to save cash by using as much old kit as possible. The ancient XT chain set runs the 36t large ring far too close to the chainstay with the standard one spacer for 73mm BB. I can't space the ring because its on the middle position of an old triple crank but I could try an additional spacer on the BB. How many spacers can I get away with before it makes attaching the nondrive crank a problem? Is there any solution other than going 1x? Do I have to put my hand in my pocket and get a new chainset?
