So, item not as described. Returned and noted as being back with them. Over two weeks later and nothing. Any effort to chase is met with empty platitudes and apologies but zero action.

It appears to be a contravention of the consumer contracts regulations 2013, but so what? What's my next step?

I've already opened a dispute with PayPal but they're not moving quickly and it's not an insignificant amount of money they're sitting on.

if they have ignored the paypal claim, then you'll get paid out when paypal rule in your favour. make a note of the date, and log on and raise to a dispute on that date.

some companies are just slack, i've raised cases with adidas on a few occasions, the last time they refunded me £7.50 for a bag that never arrived, when i had paid £15, i asked paypal to step in.

it was ignored, paypal paid out in full £15, i only wanted the diff.

if they are communicating and still not refunding you'll just have to wait on paypal timings

Either S75 or chargeback.

This should happen in your case but I wouldn't totally rely on PayPal. They refused my claim and made it clear their payment protection was only offered as a courtesy. It was slightly unusual claim though, and yours seems pretty straight forward.

Not able to help with this but a couple of anectoodal things:

Amazon refund now instant if you take the refund in Amazon credit or up to 14 days if you want the money returned to the card with which you paid. I think that is cheeky.

Not as cheeky though as Abercrombie and Fitch. Every return is £9. This is to return items to their Swindon depot using their returns process. Using Royal Mail to post there would be less than £4. They don't want you to do this so if you want to arrange your own postage they make you send it to the Netherlands! Its a very short sighted policy as everyone who is victim to it will never buy from them again.

There's no excuse here, it's literally the click of a button on paypal to send a refund. Paypal have been bloody useless with claims recently though, just taking ages to sort stuff out. If you've done everything right, ie sent it back with proof of delivery and they've acknowledged receipt then paypal will decide in your favour, it's just a matter of time.

Though depending on accounts package, retailer would have to generate a credit note on their system to match with the refund - so it's not JUST as simple as that when you have a process to keep your accounts in order.

Amazingly, corporate accounting is harder than sending money back to your mate.

Not sure it is - they can give you credit instantly, as that's entirely under their control. Refunding to a card takes time, has to go through them, their bank, your bank and your card provider, so it can take a while. Quoting 5-7 working days is pretty normal for a CC return to reach your card, and that's once actioned by the seller- Amazon would no doubt have a queue of these waiting to be processed.

In my case, it's simply that my item has been sat at good in for over two weeks without anyone touching it, hence no refund.
