My MTB has been SS for some time with an on-one tensioner, but today I finally got round to SSing the town bike...

By nothing more than sheer good fortune, the chainstay length, gear ratio and stars all aligned to produce the magic ratio, giving it that lovely clean lined aesthetic..

Is there an actual formula for working this out scientifically though?

probably.
it'll all be for shit when your chain stretches though.

You can try the FixMeUp calculator. http://eehouse.org/fixin/fixmeup.php

In my experience it works for a while, but as the chain wears it soon gets too slack.

If it gets tooo loose over time maybe I could fix it up with a strategically placed bionicon c-guide or summink similar?

Maybe OK for a town bike (with freewheel), it doesn't matter too much if the chain is a bit slack. It probably won't come off.

But for fixed, more important to keep it tight enough (but not too tight).
