Planning on doing a ride from the lock muick car park, however half of the gang have DH bikes, and am trying to find a route that will be fun for them (on the way back down) as well as for the 'XC gay boys' as the DHers call them ha.
So if anyone has and info/advice on that route that goes up to the top of Lochnagar from Lock Muick then much appreciated thanks...
Photos would be even better!!!
cheers
Someone must know something ๐
Have a look at this photoset willy.
It's from a ride I did back in June when the weather was benign and the trails were dry. We were up there last weekend again and it couldn't have been more different - a gruesome death-march along saturated trails in whipping hailstorms. I'd stay away until spring, TBH.
This can easily be linked in from a start in Glen Muick though the DH gayers might object to the climbing and carrying involved (it's 95% rideable on the right bike ;o) They might prefer the descent to Glass Allt Sheil, if they have what it takes...
Speak to the guys in the bike shop in Ballater - super helpful.
I agree with stuartie-c, but would recommend this link from the neeps website, its a brilliant run for XC or DH, we done this about six weeks back took us about four hours, as the down hillers had to push most of the ups, but loved the down over Capel Mounth, also the down from just East of Broad Cairn back to the Car park, we done 21 miles but it was great views, great trails for both XC and DH, Gay or other wise, there is about 3 quarters a mile of carrying/pushing up from Bachnagairn to the drop East of Broad Cairn, It would be a well nice run on one of those frosty winter days where the sun comes out but its still chilly.

The loch Muick and Lochnagar horseshoe is a stunner and a must for real
MTBers. There is some carrying in places but it reminds me of what MTBing is all about....riding your bike up and down a mountain! In places it's grueling and in others it's super fast DH and anything in between. I have ridden it on a hardtail and taken my DH bike round it. Admittedly only the last 10 mins of the ride was more pleasurable on the DH bike!!! A great part of the world to ride in.
