The grips they do for left handed riders have the collar on the "outside" only.

plus one for Specialized grips

Rocca's FTW! linky Pic slighty misleading, the metal locking bit goes inboard, and the black plastic endplug goes at the other (outboard) end.

Doh! Fitted mine with the collar on the outside, and I am not left handed.

Do they absolutely, positively have to be lock-on grips?

I bought some ESI grips (reviewed in STW mag a while ago) from eBay on a whim and I'm a total convert now; silicon rubber - absolutely non-slip and immensely comfortable. I do know what you mean about the outer collar digging in.

Been running the Bontrager ones for ages on carbon bars, comfy, no twisting issues.

Better than you, sunshine! And we can use parts of our brains that you never can. That's what makes us cleverer, you see. Greater proportion of Geniuses are left-handers than in Humanity as a whole.

Einstein, Leonardo DaVinci, Jimi Hendrix, people like that... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Spesh Body Geometry 'ergonomic' grips locking collars are shit. The collar won't do up tight enough without rounding off the cheese bolt, then you can't get the bastard out again.

They slide on easily with application of isopropyl alcohol - this then evaporates and the grips are well and truly stuck on.
