Looking to save some weight.

Currently got the stock KMC K810 (3/32) that comes with the Genesis Day01, no problem with it really, but I was wondering if there's any viable lightweight alternatives out there?

I admit it's probably going to be like throwing a lifeboat off the titanic, but every gram counts.

Looks like this is likely to be about as light as they get: http://www.clarkscycles.com/index.php/html/product/pagetype/aftermarket/id/csl410-single-speed

If you're looking to save weight there, maybe you ought to look at 11 speed components and the smallest sprockets you can find. But it's a steel framed bike ๐Ÿ˜‰

I use 9-speed chains for singlespeed and I think they're a fair bit lighter.

KMC cool lite or a good 9 speed.

Spend some money as:

lightweight chain + SS + Hill = SNAAAAAAAP

I was going to write "despite the weight I run an SS chain because I like having a chain that doesn't break".

But then I wondered if that's valid - do chains on geared bikes break due to sideways forces at the joins, which isn't an issue on an SS with a straight chainline?

@dale what kind of weight saving would a 9 speed give over an SS specific?

Shep, like this? http://www.evanscycles.com/products/kmc/kool-super-light-z710sl-ec011458

so the answer is 80 grams - that's not piffle.

Yes that's the one.

To answer your other question, Yes they can snap, got a nasty scar on my knee from borrowing a mates bike with a PC-1 on it. Link Snapped rather than the pin.

If a lot of force goes through a geared chain it can either snap a link or pull a link off a pin.

This is what I use: Izumi Track Chain Weight is last on my list of "wants" from a chain.

I've broken 2 3/32 chains run single speed with a perfect chainline.

IME they stretch far quicker than track chains.

Whilst I'm always a fan of shaving weight, I'd rather have a heavy chain that doesn't break.

Genesis Day One frames are heavy enough they could be made out of solid pig iron, shaving a few grams on the chain sounds like a waste of money to me...
