We had a night ride last weekend and with our woefully inadequate and unreliable lights we still had a blast, however if were going to do it again it would be great to see where we'd like to be going. Which lights would you recommend and are we now biased towards head mounted or bar mounted. Thanks for the help.

Both, bar for flood and helmet for spot - you need both. I used to always use Exposure but Ive been using Outbound lights for the last 2 winter and I'm very happy with them.

Both, if for no other reason than at some point one of your lights will fail, probably because you forgot to charge it. A head light is handy as well for trailside repairs and seeing round corners.

Again, to echo, you need both.  What if one fails.  Bad enough on a climb, what mid drop off?

They also give complimentary performance on bumps, shadows and lighting etc. Spot and flood.

Pick a budget - from cheap and cheerful to "how much" and you'll get good recommendations.

Exposure for me. Minimum faff to put on and take off makes it more likely I go out in the dark.

Monteer 3500 on the bars (extra large battery) and magicshine 1500 thingy on the helmet allows me to do everything at night I do in the day, including decent gap jumps, with no worries about batteries. Went night racing last week and didn’t really think about it being dark.
I also have a joystick for the helmet, pretty good and lightweight but the magicshine 1500 is my go to as I prefer both the beam and the battery life. 🙂

Just bought an Exposure maxx d Mk13 for £230 from the outlet store with STW discount.

Not used in anger yet, just a ride through the park from the pub, but wow - blows away the Hope R4+ I've been using.

Will be using with the Joystick I already have, but may upgrade to a Diablo if it gets drowned out.

But yeah bar AND helmet for sure

Buying 4 is a stinger!  If you don't have £800 to drop on Exposures or Outbound etc, I have a budget setup that's OK for less than the cost of one Exposure.  I can ride at near daylight speed with that setup. This setup is 'fine' - it doesn't win the arms race for lumens with mates and paying more gets more refinement, better quality and great support.   Both are from UK suppliers, and should have some support though. It'll let you figure out what works and what doesn't and gradually upgrade one by one if you need to.

MTB Batteries on the bars, Chili Tech capsule on the lid.  The chili light is integrated so no cables, but the battery is replaceable should you want to carry a spare.
