Hi All

I have an overwhelming urge to build up/buy a 29er and at 6'5" think it will be perfect for long days in the saddle on the Southdowns but i am struggling to justify it to myself when i already have 2 bikes and no money 🙁

So to keep me going and give me ideas of build etc till i am in a position to order one i would like to see what you all have.

Cheers

BigSi

Don't know how to post pictures but i'm 6'7" and have just gotten a Rockhopper 29er at Xmas and love it. Haven't ridden any of my other bikes since i got it.

Bike definately fits me better than any of the others (23" frame) and seems to climb better, rolls better and is generally more comfortable. At £750 it was a relatively cheap way to dip my toe into the 29er world. very glad i did. I'd go for it if i was you. 🙂

Hmmm... Victory?? Ventanna El Rey??

Mine's a Fluid 135. It's being repaired at the mo as it blew a top seal and atarted spewing oil - other than that it's been fine

Cheers guys, some right nice bikes there.

Ton - I'm interested to see what you get when it turns up as i think you have had a Blur LT or Heckler recently which you got rid of I currently have a Blur LT. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on how they compare.

Bonesetter - Don't let PikeBN14 see that Niner Sir as he's been waiting for his since about Sept/Oct last year and its still not turned up from the USA 😯 . Was the RIP9 the frame which was for sale on here last year, if so i was SO tempted to get it, wish i had now 🙁 . Think that if i get on with this 29er thing i will end up with one but for now i think I'll start with a steel On-One 😀

Mr Tall - Yeah come on i want to see this Rockhopper 29er as i didn't know they made one 😳

I had TWO SIR's go missing en route from the US 🙁 Turned out the sender (He's left the company now, so need naming & shaming), hadn't put customs docu's on the boxes so they never left the country! One turned up back at Niner Bikes, the other one was never heard of!

It's not the same frame that was for sale, but it was me selling. I've had my cracked frame repaired which is the one pictured.

i am going back to 29rs throughout again.
i tried this a couple of years ago, but felt that they lacked something when riding proper rough, rocky terrain.
so to combat this i bought a heckler, which i built up pretty burly.
this proved a pig to climb on, limiting my limited climbing ability even more.
i also had 2 very bad crashes trying to ride stuff i would maybye not have on a lesser bike.
i bought the haro just before xmas, i rode it at gt over xmas, and i did not ride any slower/mincier than usual.
i rode up everything, which i would not have on the heckler.
what i do like about 29rs is the feeling of being 'in' the bike rather than perched on top.
a bike builder off here advised me to get a suitable 29r and suitable stuff for it.
i have done this and when i get it built up i shall be a born again 29rer once more. no more 26 wheels.

Well, as you now mention it. I have another bike on order... so it will be for sale. I had it professionally repaired - chap reckoned it should be stronger than original

My technical ability is legendarily bad so i wouldn't know where to start with posting pictures.

Best i can do is this link to the Evans site to see the Rockhopper 29er.

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/rockhopper-comp-disc-29er-2009-mountain-bike-ec016420

I've put an SLX chainset on mine, increased the front rotor to 185mm, swapped to an EA70 bar, and popped in a Next SL Carbon seatpost and Charge Spoon saddle and am very happy with the results. May try it with my Thudbuster at some stage to see how it helps, certainly did with my 26" hardtail.

Currently building up an On-one steel 29er as well and contemplating whether I should go for a Niner SIR9 or On-on ti.

How is your height made up? Are you more leg or body? If you need more reach (longer proportioned body) then go the next size up. Be careful with Niner sizing though - don't get too focused on ETT's, as theirs are longer than most, which works for Niners

6'1" and on a Large - with an ickle stem (60mm I think) - fits nicely.

Drop an email to Niner about sizing - they are very helpful!

Also thinking of going down this route.

How do 29ers size up? I'm running a 16" 456, will it be the same size 29er inbred?

What sort of weight are carbon forked rigid inbreds coming in at?

P.S. I could sort that pointing out for a small fee (well enough for a new bike anyway)

i think 29rs feel ok even with a slightly smaller frame.
that seems weird, but they do.

I'm 5'10" with 34" leg to floor barefoot (32" trousers). I did e-mail Niner but they said contact local dealer. I have spoken briefly to ctbm. I just can't get my head around £799 for a non-custom steel frame.

The 29in x 16in inbred isn't *quite* the same size - as they are designed to be ridden slightly differently (I am pretty sure the 29er is a touch longer in the top tube, as the 456's are generally a size down on top tube length to make them more flickable)...

But yes - if you're on a 16in 26er, then go for the same size 29er (for on-one ones at least, I can't really speak for anyone else).
