This is for the chap asking why there aren't many MTB clubs.
Let's list what we DO have.
I'm in Southampton and I'm in two:
www.newforce.org.uk (New Forest & Winchester/Southdowns mainly)
www.dorsetroughriders.co.uk (Dorset & Purbecks - base Broadstone Leisure Centre)
Over to YOU.
Looked at the Dorset rough riders website when we had a holiday down there, looks great, wished I lived there rather than muddy Northants 🙁
I'm in (south) Leeds and ride with this lot.

Overall a decent bunch.
I ride with Loughborough Students CC and race for PedalPower/Cycling-Nutrition.com.

HalfwayupMTB
www.halfwayupmtb.co.uk
Manchester mountain bikers & the boggies, pretty much most of the uk covered bar surrey hills.
Tunstall and Rendlesham Off-road Group, in Suffolk.
In my area (Surrey / Berks / Hants borders)
Berks on Bikes
West Drayton
VCGH (road club but with active MTB section)
Tunnel Hill Trolls
Muddy Moles
Last two aren't really clubs, but are loose collectives, so no committees or meetings, but they do have forums and organised regular rides
I'm with these http://www.thewoollybacks.co.uk/content.php best bike related thing i've done!
Glentress trailfairies- practically a riding group, sometimes we dig oles.
The Artist Formerly Known As TBC Night Rides
Random People Wot Northwind Has Met At Races.
Glasgow Mountain Bike Club
But, I'm moving to Sheffield, so recommendations for that area would be greatly appreciated.
I'm in Malvern Cyclesport http://www.bc-clubs.co.uk/malverncyclesport/ - the club with the best riders in the country (literally).
I am in one at Bolsover, Derbyshire 🙂 http://www.bolsoveranddistrictcyclingclub.org.uk/abouttheclub.htm
Not really a club, more a group of mates but: Combe Raiders 😀
There is at least two that I know of in Fife; the Meedies and MukyRiderz - the latter active on Facebook.

Not just a damn fine bike club for all ( well, most) of your trail needs in sussex and surrey but there is cake too 8)
+1 for Glasgow Mountain Bike Club
Castle Bikes in Caerphilly have a proper club.
I'm in the local one, Moray Mountain Bike Club
Oh and Fanylion, but we don't talk about that 😉
Lincolnshire - Louth Area Mountain Bikers (LAMB) www.louthnet.com/LAMB
Derwent Valley All Terrain Club
Based sort of just south of the Peak District/Derby area!
Could stw maybe have a clubs tab on the top. Clubs could be submitted, vetted then linked up on a google map by location. Like the trails bit. Just a thought.
Cow
+1 Cow 🙂
MBRO35 - not a subs paying club but a very decent bunch who like to rides their bikes.
+2 Cowman (biased as I do membership for one)

I am not sure you could vet the guys I ride with ( it's like herding cats organising a ride) and as much as I hate change, that's a fine idea.
BucksMTB friendly, inclusive and not just limited to Bucks.
Bigfoot Cycle Club, based in Hayes , South London - road and MTB - next MTB ride this Sunday in Surrey Hills

Have had the best of laughs , some great outings, get our arses out in public and it usually ends up with a pint or 2
The 4 Seasons MTB
Not so much a club but a decent bunch of folk who like riding bikes in beautiful North Wales:

Plenty of photos and advice to tempt you to gods country 😉
Lanarkshire MTB Club

cyclesupreme (Doncaster)
Stirling Bike Club in Stirling although the roadie contingent dwarf's the mtb section. More schism's than a bunch of north African terrorists...but a lot nicer apart from the 29ers.
Las Vegas Institute of Sport.
We're not really a MTB club, more of a collection of like minded people who enjoy athletic endeavour and enjoying ourselves 🙂
Kingley Vale Mountain Bikers & QECP Trail Collective... not 'a club' but we have a forum to organise rides and trailbuilding - and we even have shirts for our racers.

Definitely a friendly bunch. Always made welcome even though I'm a very irregular rider.
