Is there a better way back than just blatting down the bridleway that everyone uses? Seems a shame to lose all that height on a straight trail. Email addy in profile if sensitive.

There are a number of more interesting routes. Have a look at this Strava segment which should then allow you to back track a more interesting route to that segment off of Leith Hill. There are a number of other tracks around this segment as well that are a useful way up from Holmburry as well.

There was once a cheeky little trail that ducked in and out of Burnthouse Copse ... but that went off-limits about 6-7 years ago ๐Ÿ™

Well, the bridleway to the south (red dashes) is an alternative. Steep after a while from the car park on Leith Hill road (just keep going). The steep bit used to be quite a chewy surface but then it got manicured. Don't know what it's like these days, haven't ridden it for yonks 'cause I quite like blatting down Big Momma from Ashfields Farm.

Gets a bit nadgery by the time you get to the back of Uplands farm.

There are quite a few- but I've no idea of how to describe them (much like my description of Peaks routes!!).

I've done a nice route via the steep rooty descent on the left down to Dukes Warren > Friday St > Abinger > Holmbury. Still some bridle ways, and pretty muddy at the moment.

Everywhere's muddy, most everywhere's rideable, choose your battles.

I did the High Ashes climb last week and the rain had pretty much created a stream effect down the middle and created a clearish channel. Yeah it's a bit loose and crappy and needs effort and some grunch, but I don't think any of us got into mountain biking because it was easy!

There's another way down to the south, just stay left if you start at the little lay-by at the (road) summit and you'll find it. It's long and fast, and goes lower than High Ashes I think.

As ever, watch for people/dogs/horses coming up as these are shared access trails and we have a duty fo care to other users. IMO they're not suitable for Strava-ing downhill.

Sorry to take it off you Nick

How very dare you! There's a near identical segment called "soul mining" which I do still have KOM on - in fact it was that one I was thinking of.

Nick I deliberately created that segment so as to make the most of my run! ๐Ÿ˜€

All desperately contrived and besides I am now off Strada; since smashing my humerus to bits only a year after I did the same to my collar bone and spine, I've resolved to take it easy for the sake of my family and my old age!
