[#486209]

I put my car in the boot at the weekend to travel Oop North and when I got there it was obvious that oil had been leaking out of the top of the RH leg (the compression/floodgate leg). Same happened on the way home.

Anyone had anything similar? They've only just been serviced (yes, I know I should speak to the fella that serviced them, but it's lunchtime and I thought I'd see what the STW wisdom was whilst eating my sandwich)

Excess oil around the stanchions after a service is perfectly normal.

This was coming out of the top though, from around the 24mm nut that holds the compression adjust/damping cartridge wotsit in.

Then there's something wrong with the o-ring (should be replaced at service) or the nut hasn't been tightened properly.

I doubt it's the 24mm nut. Far more likely to be the motion-control floodgate knob (the little gold one). Check the snap ring is securely fastened.

Back off the gold knob anti-clockwise. Loosen the little grub screw (0.5mm I think), push down on the knob and tighten the grub screw.

If it still leaks a bit try putting a small rubber o-ring under the gold knob. I used a ~3mm section cut from the end of a rubber cable ferrule. Bike stored upside down and doesn't leak a drop now ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers all.

Assuming I'll need to top up the oil a bit, anyone know how much is supposed to be in there?

Might depend on the model and year. The SRAM site should have the oil height chart to download.

I doubt you've lost much oil but if you decide to top up, be careful with the damping cartridge when you remove it - very easy to damage the rubber o-rings. Try to waggle it gently from side to side and unscrew it rather than pulling it straight out.
