thinking about chopping my trek fuel ex8 for a spicy, so is there anything to tell about em?
just re-read that, meant to say trading to zesty, not spicy...
might make a bit more sense now!
Lapierres are great bikes, they had some problems with cracking in their first couple of years, less so now. Warranty is five years now, and the warranty service end of things is apparently quite good now.
They're lovely bikes.
they look great, im hearing more and more stories about cracking and more and more stories about high maintenance too....
go for a orange five frame only and build up to suit 😉
awaits a flaming
Mine's an 09 314, it hasn't cracked, I haven't had to replace bearings and am only on my second BB (the first one did give up quickly admittedly but the replacement has been fine and knowing about water collecting in it after washing is a big help and not something that just affects Zestys...)
I think the frames are very low maintenance
Frames break but then all frames from all manufacturers break.
Dont think there are any notable high failure rates against the industry norm.
Had my 714 for about 4 months now and love it - great on the downs and feels like cheating on technical climbs. Looks wise they're certainly up there with the best too.
Early days re longevity so I'm not saying anything yet 🙂
2010 514 here, very happy with the bike, very zesty, the only thing thats cracked was my clavicle, I've been through 3 cracked Trek frames though. People seemed to be obsessed with pitching the Zesty against the Orange 5, get over it please.
You looked at the 2012 Pivot's? Lovely
714 2010 - no issues, great bike Morrocco, Spain, Trans Alps loads enduros, Wales etc still going strong no maint 1000's km on that bike. Just thinking about new bush bearings about £20 for a set I think.
I love the 514, it looks sexual, however when I test rode one the rear was squeeking and crunching and it was a 3 month old demo bike that had not been put through much abuse. The only other bike that comes close in the looks department is the Ibis Mojo.
I came very close to buying a 514, but in the end the orange won on ride quality and durability.
Has anyone ridden both fuel ex's and zesties? What differences in feel?
Had a EX8 and now have a 314.
On technical climbs the zesty wins. You can almost stall whilst climbing, put more power down and it just grips. The Trek was good but the zesty is just better.
Long fire road climbs are a bit of a chore, the Trek was longer and i think was better suited to those climbs. On the zesty, you just have to slog them out.
Downhill and on singletrack, the Zesty is far better. Feels very stable and handles all sorts of stuff. Much faster down than the trek.
Overall very happy with my 314. Still think when i'm slogging uphill "god i wish i had my trek", but then at the top, soooooooooooooo glad i've got my zesty. 4 months in and no problems either.
Millhouse millhouse millhouse....
GET A ZESTY!!
The only thing I know about Zesty's is that they don't fit some people, me that is.
If you're tall and leggy and ride with a high saddle your arse will be over the back wheel, that's with an in-line post pushed all the way forward.
The stated seat tube angle is measured at the virtual top tube intersect. This bears no relation the the real angle as the seat tube is really kinked. It's almost like a Maverick in that respect.
