Planning a shortish night ride from Pooley Bridge in a few weeks.
Thinking of heading up to the Cockpit, down to the lake, along the Donkey Track by the Lake to Rooking and (pushing) up to Boredale Hause. Which is the best way down to Howtown - Boredale or Bannerdale? Then is it worth the climb back to the Cockpit, or just cruise back on the road?

Or in fact, should I do the loop clockwise, and in which case, which is the better climb?

Not sure which of Boredale or Bannerdale would be better, but I'd sooner ride back up the same bridleway to the Cockpit, particularly if you start in Askham instead of PB. I usually park at the top of the hill and ride up to the top of Askham Fell. That way the ride finishes with a nice grassy blast back to the car and a pint in the Queens Head.

Andy.
