Alright all,
I'm off to the lake district mid October for a family holiday. I'm planning on taking the bike, can anyone recommend me a good route for a day ride? Not looking for anything rad-to-the-gnar core, but I'm relatively confident on the bike and would like a day loop with a climb and a nice down if possible!
Cheers,
Tom
I'm there right now, in the same situation, and if you're likely to visit more than once, I'd recommend taking a look at the Vertebrate Graphics guidebook. Just had an enjoyable hour-and-a-half blast round one of the shorter routes this afternoon, but it has a good selection of everything from family-friendly pootles to massive all-day epics.
It really depends which part of the Lakes you are holidaying in???
If in south, call into Biketreks for a route. If further north...call into KMB.
Holidays being booked by the in laws, I'll find out exactly where anbd post up.
I've just returned from a weekend in the Lakes, and the riding was excellent. Pop into Keswick Mountain Bikes and ask them for advice on where to ride - for a couple of quid they'll sell you clearly marked maps of all the major mountain bike routes in the Lakes. The one we did was a Lakeland classic called the Borrowdale Bash, basically an off-road loop of Derwent Water on public bridleways(Google it). Some really steep, ridiculously technical climbs and some awesome rocky descents too, also some flowy stuff towards the end oh and a 1 in 4 climb on the road(!). If you're doing it make sure to ignore the first part of their route which tells you to go on the road for a long while (boring) - and head up into Walla Crag from the off.
On day 2 we went to Whinlatter trail centre which was one of the best I've ridden - even the blue route was great fun and probably the toughest blue you'll find anywhere. We didn't have time to do the North Loop which is supposed to be the best unfortunetely. Prices were astronomical though - £7 to park and £7 for a panini in the caf...
