[Closed] KMC chain, Shimano cassette

I've just replaced my chain and cassette and it's never been so noisy. As soon as I put down any significant power the chain seems to migrate very slightly inwards towards the wheel, and then big on the larger cog.

Chain is a KMC X10 93

Cassette a Deore HG500 11-42t

No compatibility issues in theory (that I know of)

Any clues to what's up? Or will it probably settle down with a few more hours riding? (it's only had 4-5 hours so far)

KMC are great chains and Shimano make great cassettes.

Assuming you have the right chain and cassette for your bike, then it would either be a set up issue (derailleur needs adjusting) or potentially the derailleur is bent!

+1 on the derailleur set up. Ran various KMC chains and shimano cassettes 9/10 speed for 5 years with no compatability issues.

KMC make most of shimanos chains, i doubt they'd be daft enough to make their *own* chains incompatible with the largest manufacturer in the world.

As above, rear mech, hanger, hub/freehub bearings.

Or you've put the cassette on wrong (spacer missing or soemthing)

I just had a similar problem on my SRAM XO1 setup. Turned out to be the chainring. Weird, but true.

Have you checked the chainring and jockey wheels are OK?

So is this happening at the small end of the cassette, ie when in gear 10 the chain binds on gear 9?

I always use kmc chains, but when new I can't fit my park tools chain checker in, which I presume means the links are quite closely spaced. Always seem to work ok though so have always assumed perhaps my checker is dodgy or that it doesn't matter.

I bet the chain will quieten down as it wears in.

I usually use GT85 to remove the waxy coating new chains tend to come covered in and then lube them up.

What hub are you running; do it need a spacer* for 9/10 speed cassettes that you might have forgotten to put back on (no idea if this would cause your symptoms though)?

* I'm going to have to try to remember when I change the cassette on my Hope Pro 4s not to throw the spacer out with the old cassette!

It's probably a worn chainring. Sounds similar to a mystery noise I had when i put the same KMC chain only my XT 11-42 set up.

Get someone to watch you side on as you pedal and check if the chain is sticking, as it comes off the 6 o'clock positon, to the teethย closer to the rear tyre (if that makes sense).

Really getting through narrow wide chainrings quickly these days - about 3 a year with my weekend warrier riding!

Thanks for the replies ๐Ÿ™‚

I assume it isn't a chainring issue as when I'm in the smaller sprockets or the largest one, all is quiet, but I could be wrong and I have had it for a little while (the teeth look good though)

It's a 10sp cassette on an 11sp Hope freehub with a spacer on the inside

It's only particularly noisy when I'm on the largest few sprockets (but not the largest one) and pedalling hard -- the chain then rubs on the bigger sprocket to the left. I've definitely not missed out any spacers, most of the cassette is one-piece anyway

Hoping it'll will settle down but I'll have another look this weekend anyway
