there's a great campsite in creetown that's in walking distance to 2 pubs and is on a national cycle network route that goes right to the visitors centre and cafeabout 2 or 3 miles away

How close is 'near'?!

We stayed at Solway View...its in the middle of nowhere, has a small fire pit on each pitch, views of the sea, new toilet blocks and covered washup area with hot water. Its about 30 minutes drive from Kirkcudbright. No through road that doesn't go anywhere so no traffic. Woodland and walks from the campsite for the family. Downside...pubs and food are a short drive away in Kirkcudbright.

You can see it from Google Streetview.

You could always stop half way between the two at Kippford, 3/4hr drive from/to Kirry and about the same to Drum with the bonus of having Dalbeattie across the road. 2 pubs in Kipford and Dalbeattie just along the road a bit for other stuff inc bike shop.
