I saw one fella with a Leftie in pieces - was that you?
'1 torq gel every 20mins' talking of the weather there will be serious wind kicking on that strategy! 🙂
...and it'll cost £30 in gels!
2 boxes of 20 were £47 ish 🙁
no choice really, I can't keep solids down in long races

i'll be there for 3 in a row, altho not feeling great whatsoever and will need another 3 months before i recover properly( i hope). This weekend will be training road ride then mtb ride saturday, then road race on Sunday, few rides during next week then thats it. Aiming for between 8-8.5 hrs this year as long as there's no mechanicals anyway.
Did i mention i hate this race, and every year i just feel like pulling out but somehow manage not too.
Bottles, gels, bananas and jelly babies for me, with a ralph/maxxis ikon combo. trying tubeless again but fingers crossed all goes well.
*Must remember not to leave lock out on forks on for race like last year * 🙂
that was me with the lefty in pieces. very disappointing!!!!
but not as disappointing as when i turned into one big midgie biye after standing around waiting for 2.5hrs to be picked up!
Those marshalls are absolute heroes.
I will be back for a third year, hoping for a better result than last year (and less bites)
A mix of jelly sweets, gels and energy drink for me. Need to do some sums to work out how many of each for 65g or so of carbs per hour.
Couple of bananas not sure where!
front of the shorts mate. 😉
First attempt. Normally would go with bottles, but contemplating a Camelbak and doing only one stop to save time.
I'll be there, eating and drinking as usual. See you.
I'm in.
Now tapering having spent the last 5 days walking 70 miles across Cumbria.
I'll be on my Stumpjumper FSR with maxxis advantage 2.1 tyres. They weren't great for a few muddy bits last year but most of the track is hardpack and gravel where they are very good.
3 food bags. Start off with real food such as peanut butter sarnies, cereal bars, banana. Next one will be energy bars and the final ones gels because by that point I can't eat easily. Probably have some wine gums in there too. Last year I put a tube and CO2 canister in the 2nd incase I was having a bad day.
I can only get one bottle on the bike so I'll have a small pack with another in and a few odds and ends. Big saddle bag to put tools in. Trying to keep weight off my back and let me access jersey pockets.
Didn't find the midges too bad. Good dose of repellent before you head to the start line should see you through.
I'll stick my neck out and say I'm going for under 10hours, but I'll confirm that at the 50mile checkpoint.
Don't get caught up in the "race at the start". You don't need to be at the front as there are very few bottlenecks (none that I remember). Ride your own race at your own pace*. Stick to it. I felt I was going too slow at the start but was glad of it by 75 miles when I could still keep it up.
*Unless you intend to win in which case ride faster than the other guy.
I'll be there on my 29er Scandal with 2.2 conti kings. I'm going with bottles and a saddle bag.
As suggested I'm thinking about putting some spares in one of my food bags. I'm not sure what as that'll depend as to whether we get the bags back or not.
Do the bags get returned?
yes drop bags get returned back to start point i picked mine up on sunday morning .good luck to everyone whos gone im out after a cut to ma right knee got infected now on 12 antibiotics a day to try and clear it up feels like a gel knee pad, hope the weather good.
first timer hear, what's the best tyre choice for a wet one?
I'm in!
It's my first K100, so quite nervous really. I've done a few MTB marathons and regularly do road rides of 60-100 miles, but still worried! I was planning my final big ride this weekend, but the weather is pretty poor here just now, so may just do a couple of wind-down rides during the week (I did manage the 104-mile Ken Laidlaw sportive last weekend, just up the road from Kielder in Hawick).
So, to my dilemma - bottles v pack. Well, I say that, but I really mean ONE bottle v a pack with a spare bottle. I can generally get by comfortably with one 750ml bottle for around 1.5 hours of riding, unless it's scorchio hot, which I think it's unlikely to be. But I'm gonna take a 1000ml bottle on the bike and I'm thinking that should see me okay. The other option was bottle on the bike, with a spare bottle in a very small pack on my back, with other odds & sods. If I don't go for the pack option, I have a fairly large saddle bag which fits all my tubes, tools, space blanket etc. and my jersey pockets for food, jacket, pump etc. Again, pretty much what I've done previously for other MTB/road events, so I reckon I'll just stick with my tried & tested method.
Nutrition wise, I find it difficult to eat solids during events. I can have an energy bar or two within the first couple of hours, but after that I find it very difficult to eat, so generally stick to gels, carb drinks, jelly babies, bananas etc.
On the tyre front, I'm going for 2.1 Maxxis Crossmark eXception series rubber on both front & back. I've run them for some time in various guises on my Giant Anthem, so fairly happy with how they perform.
The only other query I have is about the start & event village itself. I guess it'll be pretty manic with cars parked everywhere? In fact, is there enough space for everyone to park?! What about facilities - are there adequate toilets for everyone at the start, for the mad pre-event 'comfort break'? And showers, am i right in thinking that there are no post-ride facilities on that front?
I've luckily managed to bag myself a nice wee B&B just a few miles up the road in Saughtree - couldn't go without a decent nights sleep for something like this! The wife is coming too, although she's volunteered to be a marshal or feed station helper.
Finally, I'll just be happy to finish, but would be over the moon to get a time somewhere between 10 - 12 hours!
Good to hear so many returning and nice to see some new entries. See you at registration.
Im going, cant wait, a reet adventure, sort of.
Not ridden much since SITS but hoping to get around in under 10. We'll have to see...
Cheap High 5 race packs.Use BH10 for 10% off and Quidco gives you 7.5% as well
Yeh, I know there's loads of deals around
I'm not that fond of High 5 TBH
The guys at Torq have been mega helpful sorting me out with advice and solutions for my lack of solids need and I'm more than happy to repay them by ordering their product, tastes nice too.
My goal is simply to finish inside the cut-offs, which I guess is around 12hrs

You seem pretty prepared, shouldn't have any problems finsihing it. The start and finish is based around Kielder castle, theres a nice cafe/restaurant and toilets. A cheese tostie after the event goes down a treat!
Can't remember about showers, I was staying in a B&B so just showered there. Baby wipes are good for a quick clean i think.
Lots or parking space around there.
Re. the weather, Kielder is a total micro climate, it can be sunny all around, but pissing down in Kielder, prepare for rain, theres a reason Europe's largest man made reservoir is there!
you'll be on your bike for 10 hours + (unless you're one of the super fit!) pacing is all important. the first year I went off fast, felt great at 50 miles then died a death, finally climbing off at 65 miles, take your time and enjoy it!
Only showers on site are at kielder campsite but I was in the overflow camping last year and just went along and got one there anyway. This year I'll be staying in a lovely chalet at the Calvert Trust with pre and post spa action 🙂
Not long now...
There's some fairly long fire-road descents, if it's going to be wet at all, you may want to look at some sort of front mudguard or 'beef flap' sort of device.
I can put up with a wet arse but constantly getting it in the face annoys me

Last finisher last year was in 14:20 and I took 14 the year before. If you die after the final cut off, you can really rack the time up! 🙂
Really not sure how to judge the pace for next week. Wish there was a quad bike or similar going round at a steady 9mph, then I'd just know I had to keep ahead of that! I'll be gutted if I miss a cut-off so will be tempted to go too fast and worry about the consequences later. Then when I hit those consequences I will hope I've got enough gels left to pick me up (always seem to get a boost if I up the gel intake!).

Mike will do you a 'pacelet' when he has this year's numbers confirmed
Nice one, looks like just what I need. I'm guessing the whole field must set off at a fair pace? Not sure where to position myself at the start. My only experience of anything vaguely similar was the Wentworth Goshawk ride early this year, and I was really suprised how slow it was half way back at the start. Found myself passing loads of people in the first few miles, and I was going fairly steady. No cut-offs to beat there though, and I would imagine the field is somewhat fitter at Kielder. I guess I just need to turn up and get on with it, but it's been on my mind every day for weeks now. Kind of wish it was tomorrow so I could stop thinking about it and just do it!

Know what you mean! I go to sleep every night thinking about it, what kit to take, what I need to buy, if I've trained enough etc. 😕
not riding myself, but have been told you'll need plenty,ie bottles camel/b(+sis etc) and as much varied grub as poss(jells, bars sarnies).at least 6 from tunstall & rendlesham off road group (trogmtb club)suffolk.riding this year.giving mayhem a miss!!
I sleep like a baby knowing I haven't done enough training, prob got all the wrong kit , will drink too much the night before,
but will enjoy it all the same 8)
My Avon skin-so-soft is on order, hope it arrives in time. Never used (or needed it) before so fingers crossed.

If anything, the midgies could be a good thing for me; they'll make sure I keep going, as stopping will be a nightmare with the little buggers!
Currently on my last beer before Kielder 🙁
On the Jura after a bottle of Champers,Italian Fruliano and some Rioja reserva yeh see you on the line. Training rocks.
I switched to red wine a week or so ago. Tapering 🙂

To feed the growing industry in the NE as it could feed 3 rivers, sadly it took too long industries became better at using water and many others closed. That and there is very little around there so not many towns needing flooding, the natural valley made it easier to build a damn. It rains yeah, Northumberland is full of micro climates like many hilly areas but it wasn't built there for the amount of rain.
The K100 cycle suit has been perfected to repel the midgies. Availble for hire.

miketually do you know if the 'pace bracelet' link you posted on page1 will change at this late stage?
thefeed and water stations have been given different mileages this year, maybe the course has changed a little. Might be all downhill 🙂
thefeed and water stations have been given different mileages this year
Still the same as last year on the site - it still says TBC too
If the times on the site stop being tbc today or tomorrow, I'll change the pacelet to reflect the new times.
I might do one that just has the times for 10, 20, 30, etc. miles, that'll work as a generic pacelet for any 100 mile effort at a particular speed. If you make a mental note of the distances given to the various stations that should give you a ball park for whether you're on track or not.
I just hope the wet weather blows through on Thur/Friday now 🙂
New times are there. Pacelet on the way...
goodo, copy for me please...
Pacelets are up at http://tinyurl.com/k100pacelet2011
Can someone double check the figures for me? A couple of the checkpoints were only 1 mile more/less than a feed station, so I just used one figure for simplicity.
