[#12404524]

LittleGinge got a new bike yesterday, a 24” BMC Twostroke that was on sale at tredz. Unfortunately the pedals it came with aren’t the best so I was wondering what I could swap them out for.

Apart from the SDG slater pedals, which seem to be out of stock most places, are there any other kids pedals worth looking at? Or, should I just give in and get some adult ones for him?

Edit: He’s currently in size two shoes if that makes any difference.

7 year old daughter has Nukeproof Urchin (I think they're called) flats, survived plenty of clipped curbs/rocks and being dropped onto them

As per my posts in the other threads, Nukeproof Urchin too 🙂 note they are sharp pins, although my daughter loves them and wouldn’t swap. I put the matching grips on too, that didn’t seem that special, but she loves them as well!

KC001's will probably do at that size, mine is on KC008's still as her feet are a bit smaller.

KC008s seem to be no longer 🙁 was looking for some recently and even Aliexpress didn’t have them

This gate asked about once every 2 or 3 months.

I noticed the other day that Halfrauds do some DMRs for £15 - v6 I think. Worth a look. Otherwise Amazon has loads (Rock Bros) - bought some for my son 3-4 years ago for about £13 and he still uses them

Avoid the V6 DMRs, they come with such tight bushings that they don’t rotate freely enough for kids to keep their feet on them.

I bought some for my daughter, put them on my road bike and did about 600km on them over the year and that didn’t loosen them up.

Great for dirt jumpers who don’t want them to move during no footers though.

Thanks for the pointers and links to the other threads on this.

I think of the options I’ve seen the SDG slaters and Nukeproof urchins do look like the nicest kid specific choices. However, given a few people have suggested the Nukeproof Nutrons as a potential solution I think I’ll give this a go first I’ve got a pair on the commuter that can be tried out for free. Might need to wind the pins in a bit first though.

The V6s are terrible, the plastic pins snap off on the merest hint of an impact, they’re not that grippy to start with and the bearings/bushings are terrible. Also they have a pretty big platform for kids feet.

I’d go with Slaters or Urchins as you can then colour coordinate the grips/bars etc with them.

Looks like the neutrons are out for now. Just sized them up next to the current pedals and they are way too big. So down to slaters or urchins, final decision probably being made based on the colour.

Best piece of advice I was given was BMX kids race pedals - ideal for kids MTBs!

The SDGs are good but nowhere near as grippy as the Urchins, even when you swap the pins out and use five tens, they aren’t grippy enough for really fast, rough stuff. Depends what you are doing! The slaters were ideal for my daughter at the time / her stage of riding but I think we could have probably skipped them and just gone straight to the Urchins… or maybe not!

My lad loves his Dmr v8s … although it can be a bit annoying when he insists that both pedals have to face the same way up.
