After riding all throughout the winter, no matter the weather or temperature, thinking I'd be setting myself up for some amazing spring/summer riding because my fitness would be at it's peak....

I'd just recovered from a knackered quad that hampered my riding for a few weeks; Last Friday I spent the day with my mate at Friston. Last run of the day, and my front wheel washed out, and I landed on my side accompanied by an unintentional hnurrrgg as the wind left me and a pop, which at the time I thought was my shoulder. I've done my ribs in! NHS website suggests around 4 weeks to recover, but as a self employed kitchen/bathroom fitter I don't think I'll be resting as intended, and certainly didn't this week just gone.

Feeling pretty bummed out to be honest! I know it's still early on in the year for potential rides, but sitting looking out the window this morning at the clear skies is soul destroying.

I'm so tempted to go for a light gravel road ride in the woods. But know I shouldn't.

No real point to this post, just venting, i guess!

Anyone else in a similar boat? We can all be miserable together.

Done one before but it was at the end of summer. Make sure you take regular deep breaths to fully empty your lungs or you risk pneumonia.

Mine was caused by going way faster than my skill allowed through some tight switchbacks and ending up landing my ribs on the handlebars somehow.

Four weeks will fly by! You’ll still have all of June, July, August and September to get good weather riding in.

Nothing like as bad as breaking bones such as ribs, but almost every spring without fail, I'd get some sort of lurgy that would reduce any fitness gains I'd get over the winter on the turbo. The one spring of note since '17 when I didn't come down with something was '22, when I went on to have my best outdoor season until late July, when something hit me for a week or so which dented my numbers a bit and then I picked up covid in late September which turned into ongoing long covid.

I barely go anywhere these days, so I was so annoyed to come down with a lurgy recently that left me wrecked for two weeks, which I can only put down to a physio appointment where there were ~5 others in a large open waiting room and the physio in their room... None of them coughing, so I guess I caught it from touching hand rails and not washing my hands when I got home!

Better half came down with it five days after me. I'd been making some slow and steady progress since the new year to try and get ready for the nice weather outdoor season starting anytime, but I'm back having only managed just over two hours riding this week so far, when I was doing 4-5 hours a week Jan-Mar.

Hopefully the incoming good weather will get me out, without going too mad and using lots of assistance from my new eeb.

Good luck with your ribs recovery!

If cracked ribs be careful (sorry to sound like your mum;)

Dr was VERY clear with mine, NO biking for 8 weeks I think, basically if you fall again, crack gets worse and internal organ trouble was the message, or something like that, so mentally I stopped riding, fitness will come back, especially if you have winter training behind you, mine was rubbish this year and now trying to get back into it!

Heal safe.

Yes, I feel your pain. Two years ruined with long covid, finally starting to train properly again but really out of practice leading to a broken arm six weeks ago today.

****!

.

Arm, and hopefully your ribs, are much, much easier to deal with psychologically, at least there is a known end date.

Four weeks into a fractured humerus, clocks went forward on the Sunday, I’m in A&E by midday Monday!

Just what I needed, I definitely feel your frustration. Sending healing vibes.

I've fractured ribs before and was bac on the road within two weeks - couldn't pull on the bars for a while though, and off road not really advisable.

Just climbed back on the bike today for 25 mile gravel ride after smashing up my pelvis in January. Only ditched the crutches two weeks ago.

Get some painkillers down your neck and crack on I say.*

If they're good enough to work with they're good enough to ride with.

*just in case it's not 100% clear I'm not a Doctor.

The main issue, being self employed is that the sick pay is shite! My boss (me) has zero empathy for me too!

I'm 4 and half weeks into a broken scaphoid so know exactly how you're feeling. 2 and half weeks till the cast comes off and more x-rays to see if it's healed. Hopefully it is but I'm not holding my breath, though an x-ray at 2 weeks showed it had started healing.

The hospital, in my opinion cocked up and left me with no cast for the first 2 weeks even though the x-rays on the day of the crash showed the break, a&e sent me home saying it was just bruising  ☹️

I'm absolutely desperate to get back on the mountain bike, not helped by the fact I got new a week before my crash.

Healing vibes everyone!

That sucks dude, hopefully you're back on the bike soon.

It was my first proper ride out on my beady! I got it out today just to have a look at it, I'm itching to chuck a leg over it and go for a ride.

Beady, nice, I've just replaced a Murmur after 4 years.

I managed 4 rides on my new Deviate in the week before I crashed on my hardtail. Every time I'm in Zwift I can see it and makes me feel worse 😆

Fingers crossed you're back at it soon as well 🤞🏻

This is key - a friend has had 11 weeks off, including 4 days in hospital, after doing two ribs.
