I'm a lightweight (65kg fully loaded) building up a Cotic Flaremax and looking at wheel options. Can anyone report on how good JRA Traildogs are? Other options for me are the Hunt XC wide or a Hope/Arch build from Monglu (£500) for example. Any recommendations welcome! Budget is up to £500 but I'm liking £330 Hunts!

Cheers,
Tim

I’ve had 3 sets of JRA wheels all been spot on. Might main set are carbon trail dogs though so slightly different. They build good wheels.

Been very happy with mine. Have two pairs, no problems at all. Seem well built and light.

My JRA wheels have been on 2 different bikes and have only needed bearings in the front wheel, other than that they are still spot on

Not had JRA's wheels, I have bought parts from them. They have always been great to deal with and provided great advice or checked things were right.

I have a tendancy to use Hope hubs custom built as have had good success and back up from them always, all at a great price.

I have a pair of JRA Traildog with Stans Flow rims, very pleased with them. I'm just sending the rear back to have swap the hub for the boost version as i'm moving them over to a new build. Great service and product.

I’ve got some wheels built by JRA. Treated them badly, 4500 miles through three winters. They are still in great shape.

My Hunts - I like them but as documented on here a week or so back... the rims ding easily. It they’re light and the hub is nice and fast engaging. 1000 lockdown miles in them. But for £350 I’m still fairly happy.

I’ve used their customer service for a road wheel where the hub developed play after 250 miles. Not so impressive in terms of the hub itself but they were great to deal with and sorted within a week. So I’d recommend them as a company

My JRA Stans Flow MK3's have been good. I did have to get the rear rebuilt as the spokes kept snapping after a trip to Antur, but the front I have hardly touched. The hubs are good, had no issues with them and I like the fast engagement and the sound 😀

Got a Hunt Trailwide front wheel on another bike and wanted some Torque caps. Hunt sent them out to me for free and were really helpful when I had a issue fitting them.

So I would recommend both JRA and Hunt.

I was wheel shopping last week, and opted for a pair of £500 Hope Pro4 & DT rimmed wheels from Moonglu.

Easily worth the extra for me vs. the JRA wheels - for the DT rims' infamous durability and personally I'd value the Hope hubs over Bitex ones.

Got a couple of pairs of JRA road wheels and had a pair of DT240/Stans wheels I bought s/hand that were built by them. I also used to use them a lot for wheel parts when they were still in Sheffield.

In all cases the build quality is excellent - the road wheels are easily the tightest builds I’ve owned, and without cracking the rims! The first set is over 5 years old now.

I’ve been impressed with the Bites hubs. They just work. I’ve had to put far more time into maintaining my Hope ones. I’d pay extra for DT ratchet hubs, but unless I was desperate for funky colours, I wouldn’t bother with Hope, personally unless they were very cheap.

Probably doesn't matter too much as I'm nearly double the OPs weight but, I went with EX511 rims on Pro 4 hubs a couple of years ago from Moonglu.

Been on 3 different bikes and never put a foot wrong or gone out of true.

Thanks all, I think I'll go with JRA X25's to keep to a reasonable budget
