Just built mine up this morning. Bagged the frame, forks, seatpost, bars, front mech and shifters from ebay for not a lot of money then sold/ selling the shifters, mech and bars to recoup some of the money. I have fitted the 9 speed stuff knocking around in the spares box, serviced/ resurrected my old R500's and splashed out on a new chain. Full length guards on order.
Not yet! It's still September...
thumbs up to the OP for unkempt garden, like your priorities!
Replaced an ali and a plastic due to redundancy, so not really just a winter roadie ... more like the only roadie 🙂

Fresh out the box 2015 Genesis Flyer. Took it for a little 25 miles after work this evening. Just needs guards popping on it.
This is Frankenbike. Built from bits acquired from ebay, friends, the parts bin, plus some new bits from the LBS
Ribble frame base, R500 wheels, 105 shifters and mechs, SRAM chainset.
Not quite right for me, but a good workhorse. Learned a lot building it
(ah buggrit, can't even upload a simple image. Sigh. )
Try this.

It should be this (with crud race guards) but the freewheel click under load, the pedals are seized in the crank arms and the wheel bearings are full of grease-come-rust-come-sludge from last winter:

So more likely its going to be one of my "summer" bikes such as this:

Or this when I've built it up:

Both entirely unsuitable for guards and who wants to shit-up 105 / Ultegra through winter, but fast light bikes are just so much more fun whatever the weather.
Single speed... kinky.!
Lol. It's not alone in here...
Got to love the lack of love a single speed needs in the winter. Just keep on riding it with minimum spanner time.
Food for thought. I need a new commuter; must take guards and rack. Heart says ss, head says gears.
Charge Plug or Genesis Day One Disc....
Jerrys, that stack is an abomination! Get it sorted, sharpish!
That aside, I'm sure I've seen your bike....Sarum area?

And the lack of cash wasted on expensive components 🙂

Correct on both counts 🙂
Bishopdown Salisbury. You might have seen it down the wylye valley road or the Woodfords.
I can't remember where I mislaid my hacksaw, I'm also not a 'completer-finisher' so it might stay that way for another month .
Winter is for riding in crud, off road, same old bike as any time of the year. Way more fun that wet roads, spray in face and salt eating your frame 😛
Mine's the same bike as I ride the rest of the year

Have to say I prefer getting out on the mountainbike when the mud freezes
same as the summer bike, have a di2 groupset to fit, debating wether to save that until "spring" - although that will end up being a new frame, that canyon aeroad 😮

Just the one roadbike for me.
Mine will be the same as my summer bike as well, its started creaking a bit now so I may just run it into the ground over winter and replace anything that needs doing for next summer so it feels awesome again. May bemore bbeneficial getting a singlespeed though plus it means another bike to play with. I really miss my old Langster.
Last winter I put mudguards on my Domane. They were an absolute ball ache to fit over 25mm tyres and the slightest tiny bit of sandy gravel stuck to the tyre would go scraping round until it dislodged.
I'm now looking for a dedicated winter bike with clearance for larger road tyres and guards and with the option for a rack. I also like the idea of disks having got thoroughly used to mtb brakes that don't need to clear the rim of water before they start to work. Any suggestions on how to choose between kaffenback, London road, charge plug, cotic escapade? Or anything else I should consider (I don't want to spend a fortune)?
I really want a winter bike this year as there's no chance I can get guards on my TCR and it's too nice to be exposed to cowshit & gravel covered Cheshire winter lanes.
Only way of getting one is selling one of the MTB's though
no chance I can get guards on my TCR
SKS Raceblade Longs will fit a TCR and work very well, I bought 30 pairs for our club.
My winter bike is my commuting bike. Fixed wheel, fixed mudguards, will add a rack and pannier. Will post a picture later.
Dales Rider - I like that, loving the tyres 🙂
Now running 28c tyres (just)

Don't encourage him! He only bought them because they were dirt cheap as nobody else wanted them 😉
Downsized 2 to 1 geared road bikes planet x superlight team ally now. Really rather a nice racey ride, so mud guards to fit to that for the longer winter rides. But really the proper winter bike is the ole fixie with guards fitted you just have to oil the chain and give it a wipe over every now and then perfect for winter grime ( any vintage road / track frame cheapy builds work fine )

Thanks will Nobby is right though yellow or green are cheaper. Did think of putting green on my summer bike but went for black in a 25 mm. They really smooth out the ride.
Jerrys, you should try and find someone who can give you friendly, professional advice on how to build that up properly! Someone with a hacksaw, obviously.
😉
Cap'n, if you think that's bad, you should see my CdF with the adjustable stem. Now that does offend the senses 🙂
You clearly need a style consultant. Seek guidance in your LBS immediately! 😉
i don't think i could cope with the pitying looks from Stonehenge Cycles, I'm easily upset 🙂
All year winter bike.

Now with nicer wheels and tyres that don't clog the mudguards as soon as they see some offroad action.
😀

Finished building on Saturday tea time, so did a quick shakedown ride to shop for wine.
Well, it'd be rude not too.
Total cost £650 with the frame fork and wheels coming from Bregante and half of the the drivechain coming from Gee76, both of whom were an absolute pleasure to deal with.
Thank you chaps. Mudguards will be added later, but for now the sun is till shining, so I will try and get in as many dry miles as I can.
My first road bike build as well, and about 99% happy with the result. Need to get a bit better at wrapping bar tape.
Falcon Scorpio (?) 1987
Taken guards off to straighten and clean, will be put back on soon as I find some new tyres for it.
Proper melting pot of parts... sr crank, malliard hubs, rigida Chromix rims, huret shifters, Big S altus rear mech, weinmann brakes.
No bottle cage mounts, yup its for short winter duties!
Money spent to date £26
Only joking ,my winter bike is still in bits
apart from your winter chainset looking quite out of place

Only the frame, brake levers and cranks are original. Low end steel with carbon monocoque forks (and mudguard eyelets!), handbuilt wheels and SKS P35 mudguards. Sub 10 kilos as shown, and 9.5 kilos when stripped down with summer Ritchey WCS forks. Three rear lights including a fenderbot, and a Cateye Strada on the front. Summer: 42x15, winter 42x16.
The ride is sublime. I'd like to replace the steel frame with Ti, but it would only be a pound lighter and ride the same!
Huge fan of the old Trek geometry. Nice bike that.
