Hi, I've just obtained an XTR M900 rear mech, that seems to be remarkably unspringy. Is there a spring missing, and is it savable?

Spring definitely missing, would probably be cheaper to get another mech than source the spring

The spring could just be jammed up with gunk. Strip it out, clean, soak the bits in oil and re-assemble. If the spring is missing one of the 90 deg bent ends, it's fooshed.

Bugger, wasn't cheap either.

Definitely looks to me in the second pic, there is a void where a spring once lurked.

It's the lower spring. Reckon the small bit that sits into the jockey wheel plates has come out of its hole. Could be salvageable. There's a Christmas Day task for you right there

Spring is missing, and that is a pretty old XTR mech, hope you didn't pay much for it.
