Not sure what's going on here, either a crack in the fork dropout, or the paint. Seems to go right around from one side to the other. There's no creaking or flex or anything.

Fork is from an old Ridgeback Flight and it's gets used with kids seat or trailer a lot of the time..

To my (un)trained eye I’d say that looks goosed.

Certainly looks like it.

Gonna have to clean the paint off to check 👍

From the 3rd pic alone, that does NOT look like 'just' the paint to me. If you're hauling the kids around, not worth the risk. New fork, or replace the lowers at the very least.

The only way that could be more obviously a crack would be if there was a big yellow sticker saying CRACK with an arrow pointing to it.

Damn!

Doesn't seem to be an abundance of 700c disc rigid forks around with 1 1/8" steerer either.

Principal Engineer in a fatigue lab and build bike frames as a hobby. Looks like a crack to me.

What is it made out of?

These are 1 1/8" and the set we've had for a couple of years seem OK.

Looks like a crack to me. The stress of discs , also involving extra weight of passengers, probably hasnt helped as well. Time to change them.

Remove the paint and post back but it doesn't look good.

What frame and fork is it? Are you the original owner? What warranty did you get? Was there ever a recall on the fork?

My friend had a similar thing on his commuter bike that had done thousands of miles and was past its best!

He took it to his lbs and they found it in a service, they emailed trek (I think) they agreed to replace it, the fork had a known fault but the new replacement tapered fork wouldn't fit his frame. A big box arrived with a new frame and fork a few weeks later.

He paid the lbs to transfer all his bits over and was a very happy customer.

Definitely a crack and the brake mount doesn't look too healthy in the last picture either!

There's options out there, but stock seems to be thin.

I thought I'd seen some Alu exotics on Amazon for less but can't find them now.

I'd agree, definitely a crack. What's the A2C length?

Carbon-Al bonded fork I think from what I remember? It was a light flat bar road bike. Personally I'd put a steel replacement fork on it.

Definitely a crack - jagged edge shows where its started/stopped.

As the fork is steel, you may be able to find a local fabricator / body shop who will run a weld around it for you?

The likes of Surly still make steel forks

It's a 400mm ish axle-crown rigid fork, straight 1 1/8 steerer. Spec says carbon, but I guess it's mostly aluminium wrapped in a bit of carbon. It was a cheap 2nd hand bike (160) for commuting, shops etc. Time to search for a new fork

Think the On-One steel 26" fork is something like 395mm A2C, so that might be an option if you can find one?
